Moving on up...

So I'm pondering moving on up to a 6 string bass but I'm still not sold on the Bongo... (yeah, yeah, I know.) I love my Stingray and unfortunately EBMM doesn't make a 6 stringer (but you already knew that.) So what I'm wondering, since I cannot get my bear mitts on one locally (or so it seems), what is the neck profile like? Overly large or really thin?

Seems I'm gonna have to be a reluctant Bongo convert (if I can find a 6'er to play locally.)

You know not. The Bongo will blow your mind. I went straight from 4 string (skinny necked jazz basses too!) to the Bongo 6 and never looked back. Is it comfy? Well, the neck felt wide at first. That's to be expected. But the profile fits right in your hand. I can play with my thumb wrapped around the top of the fingerboard no problem.

If you are not totally sold, watch Ed Friedland's youtube video on it. Again. and again. And again. Then find one used (there's one in the for sale section), so in case buyer's remorse kicks in, you can resell it for the same value. But it will not kick in! The Bongo is incredibly responsive and fun to play. And, as evidenced by Craig's most recent adventures (and my own too!), a total chick magnet. Read: will pay for itself with dates.

The only EBMM I own at the moment is my Bongo 6 HH and I love it. I never really played 5 or 6 string except in the music stores. I also made the jump from 4 strings. At first the close string spacing was hard to get used to, oh and the B string was hard to tackle. Though, what surprised me was that high C felt so natural. The neck is the perfect fit in my hands, and I'm a short guy (5'6") so the neck size was also a concern when looking at basses. They did a good job of keeping the neck not "fat" but it also at the same time it doesnt feel like a sheet of plywood. A year ago, I set out to seek the best 6 string bass for me. I played every 6 string bass The Perfect Bass had to offer, but could not find a neck that was this comfy. There were some fancier models, but what sold me on the Bongo was MusicMan's tone and solid build. I couldn't find any other 6 string to satisfy me. And having never owned a EBMM before I was skeptical, but it was the best decision I've made in my music career. I'm playing more than ever thanks to it.

I've been watching Friedland's vids and can't stop drooling about the bass.

I ventured over to two local GC's and played some other six'ers they had and pondered more and more about the Bongo. I've only played a 4 string Bongo. I have to say, even those other six'ers had nice necks and if the EB is as good or better, then I'm really looking forward to at least getting my mitts on one.

I use to own a dean 6 and an ibanez 6 and I have played a bongo 6. The bongos neck felt the best and then there is the tone. Hands down a better 6 string bass. Someday I will have to get one.

I played a Bongo 6 in England last year, and frankly it was so very close to my 5-string Bongos I hardly noticed the extra string. Neck profule is a cleverly flattened version of the bongo 5, as if they cut a bongo 5 neck in half and put a flat bit in the middle. Or something.

Also, it does look kind of intimidating going on stage with an aircraft carrier strapped to your body

Hehehe, when I picked my bass up from the store, the other employees referred to the fingerboard as a "landing strip"...

I think GC has a used dargie bongo 6 for a smokin price. I mean if you are serious about getting one that would be the one to have.

I have both bongo 6 and bongo 5 both H.

It was a no brainer for me when I wanted a 6 string.

I don't play the 6 as much as I do the 5 on gigs as I tend to get too many beers going and lose the C string understanding once in awhile. LOL.

But I play bars not real gigs.

I saw that one... the price is decent.

I have to admit though, the only Dargie's I'm absolutely in love with were the Stingray 5's.

I know a guy that's the sales mgr at one of the local GC's. I'll ask if they have any planned for delivery... I just want to play it before I dive in.
