so you guys know i thinking smoking is a no no as well. both my parents smoked, but have recently quit, i know what it can do. i dont like it. so ive decided not to do it. not even try. ive taken maybe 5 sips of different achoholic drinks, and i didnt like a single one of em. so i said no to that. then with the other stuff, pot, cocaine,etc.,etc. ive learned what it can do from like school and friends and i was like no way. and besides, i have no money. how can i buy my first stingray if i keep spending money on stuff like that? im sure ill get plenty high the first time i play my stingray, from the tone and the awesomeness of course.

We all know it's best to stay away from all of this stuff, but many of us have found ourselves involved anyway. I smoked at 14, drank at 16 and smoked pot at 17. Fortunately, I didn't become addicted to anything but the butts. Finally gave them up about 13 years ago. I do still imbibe, but it's nowhere near an addiction.

One interesting note: My dad was the Chief of Police when I was a teenager. He had enough stories about hard drugs that I took to heart that I never had a desire to do anything more than pot. He even had a briefcase loaded with every kind of illegal drug you can think of that he used for anti-drug talks that he would bring home with him. I guess it's a good thing I never wanted to get into that briefcase!

I have the occasional joint or "green muffin" (by occasional I mean 3 or 4 times a year), but never when I've got a gig to play. I had a couple of joints at rehearsal one time and couldn't remember half the songs.

My drug of choice at gigs is beer, but only enough to loosen me up. A lot of the time I'm running the PA from stage as well as playing bass, singing backing vocals on most of the songs, singing lead vocals on several songs, and being the main "chatter" person between songs, so I need to stay relatively sober in order to cope with all that stuff. Because I own the PA and have to drive the van home I usually stop drinking before our last set and chug a couple of Cokes to keep me awake for the drive home.

Cigarettes? I smoked for 4 days when I was 13. Didn't even finish the first packet before I decided it was a waste of time and money.

is weed legal in austrailia

Not legal, however possession of small quantities is decriminalised, so you get a fine but no criminal record. Possession of larger "trafficable" quantities is a crime.

I definitely have been effected by this subject. Me and a few friends were going to start a band little did I know that they had been using drugs. I had a sneeking suspision earlier but it was worse than I thought. Late for practices, gigs, forgetting music. I couldn't take it so I dropped out. It sucks but I don't want to be around them while they are using.

Is there an actual relation between drugs and music for you? Have you got any personal experiences(you or bandmates)? How does it affect your music?

Last week at practice I had a bit of a headache, so I took some asprin. I played much better after it had kicked in.

Recreational drugs? We'll often have a couple tins of beer as we're writing in the studio... doesn't do any harm. Any more than one or two lot of tins, however, will make your playing hellishly sloppy.

Illegal ones? Similar story to above (not that I have any experience of them, of course...), but in certain cases you cannot have the equivalent of "a couple of tins" Best avoided in most circumstances.

Like Aussie Mark and others, a couple of beers to loosen up - if it is not my turn to drive. My legs dance around better after a couple of bottles of Bud, but I keep my head fairly clear until after the gig.

A pint of lager half an hour before the gig works well to banish nerves. Another five or six after the gig is better :)
