i would like some info on my musicman sterling sn 37951
it is and has been my one and only bass since i was 14. it took months of payments at my local music store to get it home, but when i did it was on! i haven't put it down yet, literally. i've played the southeast with this thing on thousands of gigs. i would just like as much info as i can gather about it. i know this is a lower sterling serial. thanks in advance

Shaun, this Black/maple Sterling bass was built on 7/07/93 and was originally shipped to Hames Music in Gaffney, SC.

...And I'm looking to find out the age and authenticity of my stingray

Its quite an unusual colour and I've had quite a few people drool over it these past few years...I guess I'd call it a translucent lime green - I presume its a custom!

Anyway, its S# E07456

Any help would be appreciated...

Dijg

D, Your Trans Green Stingray (the official finish title) was completed on 3/25/99. That was a fairly short-lived finish, about 3 years. We used to affectionately call it Granny Smith Apple. I used to have a StingRay 5 in this color, loved it.

Yours was originally shipped to McMurray Music in Saint Louis, Missouri.

i am not sure if i am posting this in the correct location, but i was wondering if any other sterling owners have had their pickups oxodize? after about 3-4 years of hard playing as my chrome plating just flaked off of them leaving the metal underneath and that metal just formed a layer of rust. i tried several times to lightly steel wool it away but it always came back and the chrome was gone forever.i just left it that way and i am finally after15 years of ownership about to replace my pickups. is this common? in all these pictures posted around i see bright shiny pickups, but oh no not on mine. what happened and is there a way to fix it? i feel now it has started affecting my sound.

this is something that happens as a reaction to certain people's sweat. I know of some players who corrode frets, bridges, virtually anything metal, on their instrument. They wear out strings pretty quick, too! Not much you can do. I doubt it is affecting the tone, though. I would look to the strings. Might be a good idea to try our new coated bass strings! http://www.ernieball.com/forums/ernie-ball-strings/38709-sweeeet-coated-bass-strings.html

Hi Mike.

Unfortunately, there are no records for Pre-EB basses.

I have compiled a list over the years which you'll find:

HERE

As you'll see, the list is not exhaustive. Also, note that Music Man did not necessarily allocated serials to instruments in a chronological order. As a guestimation though, your Bass appears to be either late 1976 or early 1977.

For a more accurate indication of vintage, you'll find dates recorded on the neck heel and in the neck pocket on the body but the neck has to be removed to view them.

As to value, I suggest you follow the on-line Ebay auctions. It varies greatly depending on the instruments condition and whim of the market.

I'd be very interested in learning more about my EB Music Man SR4...especially what color this exciting variety of red might be called. :D

Said to have been purchased originally at Veneman Music in the Washington DC area.

Serial #28020
