DOB: 4/29/09 This one would be Alder. There is not a specific serial number break point. We started making the bodies out of mahogany as of the NAMM show of this year (January 2010)

Thank you for your help!

Hi there...I just discovered your forum and love all the MM info. I have a MM Stingray I purchased used sometime in the late 80's (1987 if my failing memory serves me right) from Bill's Music House in Catonsville, Md. She has a black finish and pickguard, maple neck with no back label, four bolt neck (no made-in-USA on plate) and what appears to be a pre-EB bridge. The bass did not have it's original case and still lives in the Fender case that it came with. I'd love to know the exact birth date (as close as possible) for my bass. The serial # is B023628...if that does not seem correct I can loosen the strings to get a better look at the bridge. Other basses have come and gone, but this is the one I would never part with.
Thanks for any help and for your great forum!

Thanks for the info and the link...from what I found this is a transitional early EB MM, using one of the pre-EB bridges. These were used from 1985-1988 on EB Stingrays. From the dates on other, I would guess mine is closer to 1985-1986. Here are a few pics...the headstock shows the early EB transitional logo, circa 1985-1987.

Mike...Your Bass will be c.1985-86.

Hi!

I'm wondering if you could tell me how old my bass is?

Serial no. B027759

It's natural finish with a maple neck.

Thanks in advance:)

Caj...Your Bass will be c.1987-88 if it is an Ernie Ball Bass (I haven't seen it). EB Basses have the string retainer on the A&D strings and 4 dot markers past the 12th fret. Pre-EB has the retainer on the D&G with only 3 dot markers.

In relation to both Basses, there are no records for Bxxxxxx serials (both EB and Pre-EB). Date stamps can be found on the neck heel and in the neck pocket on the body. The neck would have to be removed to view them.

In relation to Gaj's Bass, it was around this time that the pre-amp were dated so you may find a dated recorded on it by unscrewing the control plate.

Official records don't exist but comparing it with other serials it will be c. late 1978.

Is the serial prefixed with an "8" or "B"? Some serials were incorrectly stamped with an "8" and are extremely rare.

Its a B.. I just got it from the owner.. :)

As said above, Bxxxxxx serials were used on both early EB and Pre-EB Basses. EB Basses have the string retainer on the A&D strings and 4 dot markers past the 12th fret. Pre-EB has the retainer on the D&G with only 3 dot markers.

Unfortunately, no official records exist but a comparison with other serials will give a good idea. That serial indicates c.1985-86 for an EB Bass and c.1982-83 for a pre-EB.

To be more exact, dates are recorded on the neck heel and in the neck pocket on the body.

As to value, I suggest you check the on-line Ebay auctions.
