Hi,

I have a Stingray MM20 in 2 tone sunburst with transparent pickguard. Serial is B027621.

Stamps in the neck pocket and neck read "April 1988".
I was wondering as the Bridge has hollow saddles. This and the B027xxx serial make the bass a Pre-ErnieBall?
A Pre-ErnieBall produced in 1988?

Hope you can help!

Thanks in advance

Is this an OLP Sting Ray? (re the MM20 description).

The following only refers to Sting Rays made in California?

April 1988 is an Ernie Ball Bass. By that time it should have "Ernie Ball" on the headstock logo. Ernie Ball acquired MM in 1984. Serials with a "B" followed by 6 digits can be confusing. Although used for Pre-EB Basses they were also used for some Ernie Ball Basses up to the end of 1988. During that time period, Ernie Ball used both the said "B" serial and non-prefixed 5 digit serials at the same time. After 1988 it was the 5 digit serial only.

Around late 1987-early 1988 the string saddles changed from hollow to solid and for the first time "Made in San Luis Obispo" appears on the rear of the headstock. As this is an approx time period the Bass you refer to may or may not have both features. However, by April 1988, I'm sure most Basses would.

Thanks for the illumination.

No, it`s no OLP - It has the "Made in San Luis Obispo" printed on the rear of the Headstock and the contemporary EB+MM "Ernie Ball" on the headstock logo. And some pre-EB parts (Mechanics with old MM-Logo, Bridge with B and 6 digit serial and hollow saddles).

So I assume they just kept using using old parts.
It`s a nice one though - bird`s eye marble neck and rosewood fretboard.

Regards
TGR
