Hi Mike,
What that was really meant to be was, some of the old die hards prefer Alnico Magnets, which came in the early Stingray 5's
now all their 5's and sterlings come with Ceramic magnets which to vintage heads ,they don't sound as warm, But Over All Ernie Ball Rocks in the 20th Century with all the new and improved upgrades over the Leo Years.
Great Luck & remember, we can never have enough Stingrays

I will say this.If given the choice to par with my SR5 or my 79 Sabre, well the SR5 would be the one I would part with without a 2nd thought IMO the 79 Sabre will forever be the best MusicMan ever built. Not 1 time have I had to do anything to this bass but a well overdo routine setup the preamp that is in it is still as strong as the day it was given to me (well over 20 yrs ago)I don't know if my SR5's electronics will do the same.Who knows ?maybe they will.

As always,I could be wrong

Sabre's are cool, they just never had the kick of the stingray, plus the way the pickups are wired their too noisy in split positions.
However the Bongo Bass sounds INCREDIBLE hands down, you just have to convince your mother it's really a Bass, For me, the looks don't do it, for others it's the bass of the 21st century.
l'll Die with a stingray Thankyou. They do everything any Bass Player could want, Just ask Mr. Tony Levin.
Thanks Dave.Jeffrey

It's crazy how many sounds you can get out of the Bongo Bass. Session and studio musicians will fall in love with it.

My Sabre is as loud as my SR5 and as far the noise of the pickups in the split position,I've never encountered this problem at all....I've must have got a good one !

I think we all owe a great deal of credit to the late great Leo Fender for helping design another winner--what an innovator that guy was!

hey Dave... do you have pics of your basses. Thumper has like 30 someodd (not all Rays) but I can't imagine 79!!! That's awesome. I wouldn't mind having half that amount in the future. I have 3 right now and a great Korean made copy from Dillion that's setup like a later Pre-Ernie Ray (4 bolt neck, 2 band EQ, input on the face, etc.)
