Correction - Opeth is THE most talented band out there IMHO.

Sorry, my bad! i should burn in hell! :D

Yeah your are right Dream Theater is #1 in my list. But they are (for a very slight difference) relatively old school compared to Opeth.

No I will stand by the crap statement. First every era had some crappy teen artist but they by no means ruled the roost or were even taken serious. You can look back at the Fabians, Frankie Avalon, Bobby Sherman, Donny Osmond and for my friends across the pond Cliff Richards. We would be here all day if I listed every artist that was relevant, but I grew up during the British invasion with a brother who was 7 years older who was a vinyl collector and who,s room looks like Jimmy Pages music room in It Might get Loud these days though back then it was a mini version. The Beatles will always be the greatest band to me, though my musical taste changed every decade.

For those who can even dare say music is out there today like always just look at the artist from the 60s,70s,80s and 90s from the British Invasion, The Folk Scene, Stax, Motown, The Blues Scene,Jazz, Hard Rock Scene,Punk,Singer Songwriters,Southern Rock, and so on and so on. Now where talking about tons of artist from all these genres, not 3 or 4 like today.

Hip Hop which is the biggest pile of crap as no one can carry a tune or even play an instrument is the biggest joke. Just like the Blues this is derived from African Americans who had to grow up in houses that had artist like Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, Four Tops, The Styleistics, Otis Redding,Aretha Franklin, The Supremes,Ronnetes, Wilson Picket, Jackie Wilson, Marvin Gaye, Ike and Tina Turner, Al Green- I could be here all night but how do you grow up in a house listening to some of the greatest artist of all time, and forget the house bands of killer musicians that played on these artist albums and come up with Hip Hop.I can remember when Jimmy Page said Puff Daddy called him and wanted to him to redo Kashmir for the Godzilla Soundtrack and Page called him back and said he was going to change the key from D to E and he said Puffy said "I dont know nothing about no D or E but do what you want" LMFAO- and this guy is the head of a record label and one of the top Producers in music today. Well we know he aint no Quincy Jones but please. I swear give me a notebook and drum machine and I could write a rap album in a week and find some kid to rap it and it would be a breeze.

I can remember hating American Bandstand because it was the one show where artist lip Synced, which today is an art form and half the artist due whole concerts lip syncing and the audience does not care, or should I say does not know any better. They also have to have 20 dancers on stage with them. Maybe someone can explain that one to me.Till this day I still have never heard Britney Spears sing live.

Okay I got it out,lol but anyone that says music today is even remotely close to the way it was has to be in there 20s, it really is in shambles. And for those who like Nickleback who are from Canada I will say they are a talented band that plays and writes there own music and had a hell of a single with- This is how you remind me. But if you like them pick up another band from Canada's greatest hits album-The Guess Who, and let me know what you think.

Still can’t believe no one grilled me on having Air Supply or Nickelback.

Of all the music I own, the most played is my hometown boys RUSH. I’m pretty sure I have every song they’ve done. I used to be able to play their incredibly technical & difficult to learn music. Even after 40 years their music still stands the test of time & even today the boys are as tight as ever.

I can’t wait for 2 weeks from now, the documentary “Beyond the lighted stage” comes out.

bitter......
IT resonates with its targeted audience. Because you dont like it or understand it does not make it crap.

I remember hating Eminem and I saw him when he was nothing on the Warped Tour. I saw eight mile and it opened my eyes and ears. I believe him to be a significant artist. Not my favorite but I respect him as an artist

+1 for the Guess Who. Burton Cummings great vocals and Randy Bachman's crankin guitar, timeless rock and roll. And Britney's a joke, how can they call that a live concert, when she's not even singing, just pole dancing. That's an insult to great live acts everywhere. Pathetic!

I would check out pandora and set up a station with some of your favorite artists. I have found tons of stuff I like using this method. I would also suggest you listen to the flower kings and porcupine tree.

How about Big Elf. I saw them open for Dream Theater last year and loved them. They have a really cool 70s hard rock vibe.... and the singer plays a Hammond Organ!

Personally I love Opeth, Alter Bridge, and if you really want to hear old music coming with a new breath, listen to BigElf those guyz are really awesome, and of course there are a lot of underground and very good bands today. Is just a matter of taste, i think.

dude we almost like same music hahahah , again Big Elf great band.

your looking in the wrong places....there is some great instrument driven hip hop out there. Go to a hip hop show and you'd be surprised at the level of musicianship. Here is a great band that played in our Battle a few years ago Natives of the New Dawn

I hate to break it to you, but there's been nothing new since Schönberg and the few top-tier post-modern composers that came after him- nearly a hundred years ago. Minimalists and Jazz covered anything and everything that was left after that(if you can call that music).
People bitching about "no new music" is as old as music itself. If you expect music to reinvent itself in a matter of a decade or two, you're in for a miserable ride.

::insert argument about electric guitar and something about hendrix::

Given what you listed as the music you listen to, I guarantee there is something out there you would consider "new". I listen to a lot of bands that you've probably never heard of. A lot of them are horrible attempts at polytonal composition, but if you've never heard it, it'd probably be interesting. Some very technical bands out there.

Oh and I guess the age-old retort is: "If you don't like it, fix it yourself." Reinvent the wheel. So on and so forth...

You're welcome.

LOL +1 on the Schonberg comment. Can you point me to those technical polytonal bands? I'd love to hear that

andypeters I am not slagging on Richards but he does kind of fall in the Idol category though I agree he had a hell of a band and did buy Hank his famous Strat.lol Reminds me of a time I was in the China Club in NY back in the early nineties and saw a guy sitting all by himself at the bar in the back. I knew who he was and went up to him and said hi Pete as it was Peter Noone from Hermins Hermits. I sat down and had a drink with him and he was really a hell of a nice guy. My friends came by to get me and as I was walking away I just kept thinking that if this was 25 years ago every girl in the place would be causing a stampede as here is a guy who at one time was outselling the Beatles and no one even knew who he was, which must be a horrible feeling. Ricky Nelson who a lot of critics try and put in the teen idol category but in my book was an authentic talent and like Richards found himself a great guitarist, or better put one of the greatest ever by the name of James Burton really sums that life up in the classic-Garden Party.

Sterling here is one we are not going to ever agree on.lol For some reason I really just cant picture you driving down the strip with the speakers pumping My Name is Slim Shady and you singing along. Can EBMM turntables-no I am not even going to put that thought out there.LMAO
