Hey everybody, long time no talk. I figured instead of posting another OT topic just to spread some words, I'd start a new thread everyone can enjoy [and help make relevant in case no one cares about what I have to say :)]. Anywho...

What new music have you been listening to lately that you think other people would enjoy?

I've gotten way into this band from Australia called Karnivool. If you're into the Sevendust+Nonpoint style of groovy heaviness, these guys take the cake. Their single "Themata", which is also the title track of their DEBUT cd is one of the best songs I've ever heard [I say DEBUT because these guys sound like a well oiled veteran beast of a band]. Give them a listen at http://www.myspace.com/karnivool, and if you really like them, they are touring the US with Nonpoint, Ankla and Skindred starting this Fall.

I will check that band out when i get home. My work doesn't let me access myspace. They expect me to "work" all day. sheesh.

I have been listening to alot of Dream Theater lately, they're just this local band from Long island, NY. Anybody ever hear of them? :p
But seriously, for anybody who never bought any of their cd's or were not huge fans, check out their latest CD, Systematic Chaos. I believe it has something for everyone. It has been playing nonstop on my Ipod all summer.

I'm currently listen to RECULVER - who are a British band who supported us at the DDD 2007 festival a couple of weeks back. They're a good honest, slightly retro heavy rock band with bits of Soundgarden, AC/DC, Nickelback (!), etc mixed up together. You can download lots of their songs a RECULVER OFFICIAL HOMEPAGE

First of all, what's up Jimothy?!! :D

Karnivool is awesome! Themata has a killer groove to it. I heard them on CH48 Squizz on XM a while ago. I've not heard alot of good new rock like that for a while though. I'm always listening to Squizz for more good stuff though!

EDIT: Just listened to Reculver. They sound a lot like my old band! But much better. Haha. Cool stuff......

Not too much going on here. My computer has been dead for weeks now, along with the tabs of all the music I've been writiing, and every audacity project I have ever compiled, so beside being heartbroken from that, I've just been stuck on my JP7 all day everyday, which is much better than any band aid. What about you?

Speaking of bands, I found this website called Bandmix.com, its like Myspace for bands without all the crap, you basically post a page that acts as you music page, profile, and a classified add all in one. If anybody's been looking for a band, that might be useful.

I'm in love with Karnivool right now. Themata got me hooked, but the whole cd is brilliant. Every song has the same characteristics, but every heavy part has a different inflection on it. Themata's opening riff/prechorus has the 16th note lead part on top of the extremely syncopated rhythm part, and Cote is really heavy, but it feels like they never hit a low note, first song I've ever heard thats happy and heavy without sounding like a failure. Shutterspeed has the Sevendust style octave jumping low B bouncy riff, Fear of the Sky has an odd feel throughout, and the chorus is beautiful, Roquefort has one of those rolling heavy riffs, kinda reminds me of a Dime style riff played with legato hammer ons and pulloffs instead of vibrato. Lifelike is my favorite on the cd, the bridge is awesome, straight EVH tone, great use of harmonics, and the outro is pummeling. Scarabs is meshuggah. Mauseum is a great tool-ish song, the singer sounds more like maynard on this track than any other, and its also put together very well. Each song has its own structure, a perfect intro, amazing hooks, and great space. Theres always something going on, but theres always room to breathe as well. I love it, and yes, I was glad to hear something new and fresh too, I was starting to lose hope in music haha.

I was always a rocker/head banger which is now I suppose coined "classic rock".
In the last year or so I've been all over the map listening to some things I would have never considered ever.

I've been listening to this:

Keith Urban
Larry Carlton
Keb Mo
Robben Ford
Allan Holdsworth
John Fogerty (way more than I ever have)
Brad Paisley
Andy Timmons
Thomas Blug

This is the short list. I've been all over the map! :)

great taste Foggy! Paisley and Timmons are on my daily listening schedule. Blug is much underrated!

When I was young dummy, I refused to ever listen to any country/western music, it just wasn't cool.
But since I've been getting into some hardcore blues, the connection to country is undeniable.
Timmons and Blug just have some killer tone and chops. I'd easily put them up there with Satch and Vai.

Moving further down a similar line to Foggy, lately I've been listening to a lot of Nickel Creek. Chris Thile is the most amazing mandolin player. I'd even say he's better with a mandolin than most great guitar players are with guitars. Fantastic music (modern bluegrass/country thing), great tunes, vocal harmonies to die for and incredible musicianship. Sean Watkins is a fantastic (acoustic) guitar player too. Some of his solos are astonishing.

Is there a better band?

As far as newer stuff, I've been digging The Panic Channel's One lately. Andy Timmons Resolution rules. Dramagods. Sonny Landreth's Grant Street & Tool's 10,000 Days. All good stuff.

You beat me to it. That album rocks! Love the dynamics. I was really impressed with the album and their live show was great, too. Definitely worth checking them out:

The other band I can't get enough of for the past few years is: Ra. These guys mix heavy hard rock guitar with well crafted melodies. Best "new" band for my money in the past 5 years. Check out their myspace page for a flavor of their music.
