When I bought my Silhouette Special last year, I looked at Musician's Friend. The question I had was "Was the image of the guitar really the one I would be shipped?" It seemed like they pasted a stock image (color & pickguard), but I wasn't sure if I was going to get that one or not. Maybe I am ignorant, but I figured that if I was going to pay that much for a guitar, I wanted to know exactly what I was getting.

I ended up going with MakeNMusic in Chicago, IL. They had photos showing EXACTLY the guitar I was purchasing. Thus, I could clearly see what I was paying for. The guitar was shipped to me, and arrived in perfect condition.

Oh by the way, MakeNMusic sold me the SS for quite a bit cheaper than was advertised on MF.

Hi smelly......"Or do we have to wait and buy used ones?" Are you reffering to Adouglas' post?

-Cheers

Hey Kevin,

Yeah, I'm the tightest Scotsman in the world, but one of the main reasons I bought a dd was it's an amazing guitar, that I could buy because of the forum, the thought of something similar going on but for US knuckleheads only is a bit off putting, I'm not objecting to the idea, I think it's fantastic, I just don't see how limiting this is i) good for the non -us market ii) going to reduce people buying used balls instead of new ones.

Not that I'm saying you as a company have those problems... just confusing in my head.

Smelly.

World domination has to start somewhere. :D

But really, Smelly, what is BP supposed to do? Hold off on distribution deals in the US until they gear up for world penetration, like Starbucks? Even Starbucks started somewhere.

I'm thinking it might be possible to offer that special edition to the local distributors anyway...it's not like they'd be taking business away from MF.
On the other hand, if you look at Ibanez having different models and versions in pretty much every market, it wouldn't be bad even if it's US only - keeps the used trade interesting ;)

If I could configure the model I wanted (like the MM website), I'd consider ordering one. If that's the case, would the 45 day return policy still stand?

If they (MF) stock standard models, then it becomes a pricing game between MF and any other retailer.

I generally buy guitars local because:

1) They can service any problems right at their shop.

2) I can trade other gear to get credit towards the puchase. Selling on eBay is getting more expensive and risky.

3) I can rely on the local shop's experience / expertise with gear.

4) Pricing becomes a smaller issue when quality and service are the value add. I'm probably the last person on earth that rates price lower on the list than product quality and service.

My biggest problem now is I can't try an AL out at a local dealer. The closest EBMM dealer is 70 miles away, and they don't stock one. If MF had one (they don't have MM90 AL's, and I can't select the options I want) I'd probably try one as there return policy seems generous enough. The shipping would cover the cost of the drive to try it out anyway.

My $0.02, for what its worth.

I have dealt with Musician's Friend and never had any problems.

If you plan on a Pinkburst AL reissue, I would definitely grab one

Have the models offered available for instant purchase. I have ordered probably $15,000 in gear over the last two years from them with no issues. The only frustration was seeing that MM guitars were on a waiting list. For some reason, that made me a little uneasy, so I ordered from a smaller dealer for more personal service.

I'd be cautious if it would make it that much harder for my local shop to get EBMM guitars in stock.

Even with the quality of EBMM, I like to try any guitar out in a shop before buying it. Despite a return policy, doing mail order returns with guitars valued in the EBMM range does carry some risk. Not to mention, it's a hassle.

Further, if more of the EBMM production is sold through GC/MF, does that not limit competition?

All in all, I prefer to see these great guitars go to a variety of vendors, and not get concentrated in a few.

Just my $0.02.

Best,
Marc

Kevin and Candid,

I know and expect that a US based guitat company will be focused on their US customers..... and I didn't think otherwise for a second....

but there's obviously money in europe and beyond, methods of sale like the DD capture rarities on a global scale.

I'm am sure Poppa will do what he wants and this post will make no difference to his decision, but it's a forum and you asked the questions!

But your still the coolest guitar comapny on the planet

Smelly.

Smellster,

We're focused on the World baby!! The Music Man line has been picking up steam and gathering a cult like following in many countries outside of the US. We are, and most certainly will continue, to focus on all markets. Small...large.. strong...week and everything in between. We value all of our customers opinions and I'm sure thats why BP was asking for everybodys input on ideas that could help to improve and expand on the already great job that Musicians Friend is doing. In this instance MF is a US based dealer and the idea's are flowing from all sides...but lets not throw a monkey wrench at these idea's before anything is finalized. Maybe next time we will be talking about a UK based dealer/distributor.

Ernie Ball/Music Man...saving the world one guitar at a time!!

:D

It would be great if they kept a good stock of Music Man guitars and basses in a variety of colors, especially in the non standard colors. Also, an inventory of all your gig bags and cases (especially the LE cases that you have with some of your guitars-BP if you can sell these seperately you could sell a ton of them!) Thanks for listening!
