I'm interested in buying a Musicman flight case for my bass and was wondering how I could get hold of one! I've had trouble finding them on shop websites and am really just wondering if they are only shipped with the basses or if they can be bought!

And I'll also take the opportunity to say hi as I've pretty much just signed up!

Are you talking about an actual flight case, or a Music Man hardshell case? The MM case can be ordered through any dealer, and you can occassionally find them on eBay. An actual flight case would probably be a custom job that most case companies could do. I imagine it'd be pretty pricy though, and not really worth it unless you'll actually be flying with your bass.

MusicMan hard shell cases are made by SKB. And unless you have a Bongo, which headstock is differently shaped and longer than other basses, you actually can use a standard SKB case for your StingRay or Sterling.

Since you're in the UK, I would recommend a Hiscox case over a SKB. Costs a little more than a SKB, but is lighter and stronger. Best aftermarket cases available, in my opinion. Hiscox are made in the UK, so I imagine the prices would be reasonable over there.

Unconventional Flight Case

I do a fair amount of flying with my basses (4 and 5 string Stingrays) and was frustrated when Northwest Airlines managed to punch a hole through my SKB "Bass Vault." I liked the idea of having a case company make me an actual ATA rated case, but they were so stinking heavy I wouldn't have been able to get it onto the plane without paying over-sized and overweight fees. Then one day while I was unpacking some mics from a Pelican case, I got to thinking if there might be a Pelican case big enough for my bass. Well, turns out that there isn't, but I found something better. The iM3300 Storm Case by Hardigg is a perfect solution. Just barely big enough for my Stingray, it is crush-proof, puncture-proof, airtight, and waterproof. Heck, it even floats and could be used as an emergency flotation device in case of a water landing. This case is normally used by special forces for the M24 sniper rifle, and there are many testimonials on the web about their durability and longevity. It even comes in three colors, black, tan and olive drab. (Mine is tan.)

Don't get me wrong, this is not the cheapest solution, they go for around $200, but it seems to me the protection is worth the extra money.

Peace,
Jeromy

the Hardigg looks cool for sure.

But as a Bongo flier, my SKB Bass Safe has been stupendously good on domestic and international flights to many varying airports and levels of airport staff... :(

never have had a problem with my Bongo in a Levys gig bag and then in the Bass Safe.

(but I still would dig an EBMM Bongo case)
