I tend to become interested in effects when I have no GAS for a new bass or amp. its silly really as I don't need any effects but I have amassed a small collection of expensive pedals that are quite fun to mess with with. But nothing compares to a good bass into a good amp and cabinet. There is a presence and punch that is diminished once pedals are introduced into the signal chain. Sometimes its worth it to have that effect available, but most of the time not.

The only pedal i use is an old Zoom BFX-708 has the drums and headphone
jack, great to jam at home with.
For practice or live, i prefer my tone, directly thru my bass head.

My rig goes like this:

Korg Pitchblack Tuner > Diamond Bass Compressor > Tech 21 Bass VT > EHX Mirco Pog > Diamond Phase > Diamond Halo Chorus > amp.

Compressor's always on (gently) and after that, I'd say the next "most used" would be the Bass VT and tuner. The others are used in great moderation.

Go try the Bass VT, a really fun pedal capable of an amazing array of tubey tones.

Don't know about "must have" but here is what I'm rockin' right now.

I could get along quite nicely with the VT Bass and the Blueberry. :p

I've tried having a really large pedal board (which drove me crazy) and having no FX whatsoever.

But... I like having my Boss FT-2 Dynamic Filter handy (which they only made for two years), particularly paired with my Boss ODB-3 overdrive. Way cool sound that I haven't ever found produced by any one effect. It's nice to turn on for a passage and then go back to normal.

Also - I split my signal so that the top end gets the FX but the bottom stays clean so you still have all the punch and presence of a clean signal.
