In the link Mark referrs to above, I'd positioned the pads in a straight line in front of the string saddles. But since then I've stepped them down with the saddles which I think looks a tad neater. Whichever way, they turn out well.

Very cool link Rod!

I have a question, will this work on a 'trans' bridge on my Sterling? There's definitely space there to put them in, but it seems like the bridge in your pix has an extended 'platform' to lay the mutes on. Do you know the height difference b/w these bridges? I suppose I can just follow those directions and just add that to the height of the foam...

Thanks! Gotta find a mouse pad to blunder!!!

Aja,

I've been waiting to find someone else to try out the pads I can make. It's the same self-stick on material and the same foam as the intact original mutes on my other MM bass. I think they're very nice.
Send me a pm me if you want a set...but I'll want you to replace all 4.

The 'platform' you refer to is the mute spring assembly (at left in the pic directly above). You need the assembly for your particular type of bridge which should also have hex screws used in place of the original round thumb screws. These will do the same job as the original screws in adjusting the springs up and down.

Thanks Rod...

I was just going to start a thread asking whether these are still available anywhere? I'm trying to 'tame the beast' a little, just experimenting w/ the tone possibilities, and am very interested in how it would sound w/ mutes. Any advice is greatly appreciated...

They're hard to find as the mutes were deleted about 10 years ago. Keep an eye out on Ebay. Also check music stores that sell EB instruments etc as they may have some N.O.S. tucked away on a shelf somewhere.

Thanks Rod. I e-mailed EB and they gave me the same response. I proceeded to call my local shop that has new & used EB's, but the surly manager refused to connect me to the repair shop b/c they were 'too busy to deal w/ this', and he was 'sure the don't have any' lying around. I hate that guy. I'll call around town and try my luck.

Thanks again.
