My Bongo has gone Nuclear - It has Cobalts UPDATED - video added

I went to the Bass Guitar Magazine show last Saturday and amongst other things spent a lot of time on the Musicman/Strings and Things stand - tried several basses some of which were strung with cobalts. My first impression after playing a Classic Ray with them is these things sound both louder and have a higher response over the whole range than the normal Slinkies on my Classic Ray.

Anyway, thanks to Ming (he's not quite as scary as Spudmurphy from the skinny string side says!), I actually came away with a 5 string set of Cobalt Slinkies , and I've put them on my Bongo 5HHp. They sound stunning. Acoustically they really are less zingy than normal new rounds, but the sound is great and I seem to be able to play complicated parts more easily and accurately using them.

I played the bass in a jam session last night and the sound was really superb across several songs but I have a gig on Wednesday night so plan to use the Bongo for a range of the songs, from ballads to up tempo technical stuff - I will post an update of my thoughts and a few pics later this week. I will be using the Classic Ray for the rest of the set.

A Douglas, Bovinehost you really must put some of these on your favourite Bongo - they've sort of put the icing on a very good cake for me.

As per the title of the ELP song, I feel a very 'Lucky Man' to have these! I'm going to order a set for my Classic Ray as soon as they're available. I think they'll benefit the sound, good as it is already.

Dang. I want those.

I hope to get some at the Frankfurt Musik Messe in two weeks. I heard rumors that there will be a public booth for EB / Music Man again and looking forward to it.

There is no doubt These Cobalts are an amazing String, The long Gevity on these seem to be double or more then anything to date, very powerful String, Enjoy Life with Cobalts on your Bass.

I have 2 packs of Colbalts just sitting here- I just can't bring myself to use them yet (I have 2 packs of Super Slinkys and 3 packs of Coated... and if I try the Colbalts first I will probably waste the others) :D

I put my one pack of cobalts on a non-EBMM ... quite
reasonably simply cuz none of my EBMMs needed any
improvement, and I have a particular ax thaz low on
output but way bassy in tone ... so, I figgered thaz
the ax thaz actually NEEDING the cobalt medicine.

Well ... it worked, but I doubt that I'll be reaching for
this ax instead of my EBMMs [and some others]. So,
installing cobalts on this particular ax clearly proved
what they can deliver. The difference is definite.

I'm holding off on buying new strings until the Cobalts are more readily available (especially 5 string sets). Can't wait to try a set!

I just got my shipping notification for a five string set of Cobalts at the same time that I got the shipping notification for my new Bongo. Coincidence? I think not.

I'm in the same delima. I just picked up a set of cobalts today but I've got EB flats and Slinks in the wings. Good delima to have though...

No problem.

You could send those cobalts to me to ease your mind on that...:D

Ming? yeah, he really is such a nice guy.

I was lucky enough to visit Strings and Things yesterday - see my thread
http://forums.ernieball.com/music-man-guitars/52683-i-saw-things-no-other-mortal-has-seen.html
- but alas there were no Cobalts in their factory.

Hope to try a set soonish.

A further update on the Cobalts - I used the Bongo last night for part of a gig and the sound was excellent. The cobalts do make a difference - not sure how to describe it but the tone was very focussed and warm at the same time - very even response across the range, from a fabulous tight low B to the top end - one of the songs starts with a bass thing up around 12 th to 15th fret on the D and G strings - which sang out nicely but was in no way zingy - I had the Bongo EQ all set flat with a little low mid boost - slight bias towards magnetic (away from piezo) and pu pan on centre setting - my son took some nice photos but I don't have them yet. I'll post when I do. At the sound check I fooled around a little with the Bongo EQ a boosted the bass - OMG the response was amazing!

Meanwhile - some pics of the Bongo with its strings  - plus one snatched pic of the MM stand at the show, with Ellen O'Reilly performing - sorry they aren't good quality. The stand was very busy - I had to queue to try the Classic with Cobalts.

Hey Spud - S and Ts place is great eh? I collected my Classic there a couple of years back. My Cobalts were from some 'spare' sets they had - all the others were on basses at the show and Ming said they were awaiting some six string sets.
