I just strung-up my Dargie Bongo HHp with a set of cobalts tonight after work (I finally got one of the 3 sets I have on order :) )... Holy Santa Claus S#!T !!! Punchy as hell, clear as a bell, loud, but not too zingy sounding... Bass Bliss! I usually have to play new strings for a few hours before they sound decent, but MAN... Oh MAN are these things good right out of the package!

Doooohhd ..... you just flip the brass balls over.
They're pretty much alike on both sides. I think
thaz WHY they make them like that ....

Lefty strings have to be wound the other way. See, if they aren't, the coriolis effect of the Earth's rotating magnetic field won't interact with the string as intended and the notes will come out backwards.

That would be a bad thing.

Not on the Bongo with cobalts - Bongos defy the laws of physics or anything else for that matter - A Douglas surely you know this :p

I'm loving rocking my Bongo at the moment - hey has anyone else done what I did last night - well my Bongo is, frankly a bit of a knob farm (HHp) and whilst twiddling between songs, I managed to turn the low mid control off completely by accident (so I found out a song or two later) - apparently they could still hear the bass at the back of the room (cobalts plus inherent Bongo goodness) but I knew something had gone slightly amiss - I even wondered about the batteries until I stumbled upon my error - when I put it back to centre detent the difference was ....well exceptional!

Can't recommend these cobalts more guys - I am looking forward to the day my Classic Ray can have them as well ;)

I'm looking forward to the day when 5-string sets show up in stores... if that ever happens. The local Guitar Center has 4-string sets, but not the 5s. The Coated 5-string sets never wound up on the shelves either.

I like to buy my strings in person because it's about the only reason I have to take a trip to my local retailer. If I have to order anyway I might as well just save the gas and have 'em shipped to me. Now I look at the GC website and I see that the 5-string sets aren't even a stock item. Special order only.

I guess I'm just a victim of supply and demand. Would be nice to find some in stock somewhere... anywhere... Beuller? Beuller?

Cobalts won't happen for me for six more months anyway, unfortunately. It was time for new strings this week so my reserve set of regular Slinkies got used. Next string change is in September.

Take that Mr Guitarist - my Bongo's got Cobalts!!! A real 'bass face' going on as well!

There is a You Tube vid of one of the tracks played on the Bongo - I'll try and hook it up if I can work out how - BTW the Ray with Slinky's sounds great as well on the vids.

I cancelled my order with JustStrings and placed an order with The Perfect Bass (they have them in stock). I have a gig this weekend, so I stopped by GC and they didn't have a 5-string set but they did have 4-string sets. So, I got a 4-string set and put it on my Bongo 5 (and just left the regular slinky B string). I'll replace the B string when the other set arrives.

At first they sounded bright (probably b/c I was taking off some old strings) but after about an hour, they sounded fantastic. Very deep and yet very clear. I'm looking forward to playing them this weekend.

Video of Bongo with Cobalts

Video of the Bongo in use with Cobalts at a gig. Best listened to on headphones to get best effect.

No PA assistance for instruments (there was a prob with house PA desk so they used a mini one - only room for mics) - recorded ambiently at back of dance floor.

Oh and there's a special effect towards the end of the track - the bass line has a chromatic run up one semi-tone adrift - yes it's a cock up - I'd put these on the bass a couple of days before the gig and I was so bowled over by the sound I made a huge error!!! IMHO the bass got a really warm sound for a ballady song.

If anyone wants to look at any of the other vids on the site, all are on the Ray Classic with slinkys except Willie and the Hand Jive - which is on the Bongo.

Yes you're right - the Bongo sits in a mix really well - the cobalts enhance the sound I think - some of the slap sounds are just so good also - not that I do it often.

Another gig tonight so we'll see how it goes. Now if a Bongo came in coral red or some colour similar...........................but for now the Ray is the main bass for this gig.
