ya, I think Monkeee and me are the only ones with shaved(sanded) necks and I have to tell you, IMHO it takes the Bongo to a whole new level. by taking the finish off it actually makes the profile of the neck get just a hair more slim and just feels sweeeeeeeeet!

I would highly recommend the Telly Savalas to any Bongo owner :D

Actually the bass in Poland that belongs to the OP has a sanded neck, as well.

Although, I think you and I are the only ones who did it ourselves. :D

Hi guys, I mostly post on the guitar forum but was wondering why the whole neck and headstock are painted on the Bongo? Is it solely for looks? Structure? Do you think it will ever be an option to have a natural back and headstock?

I really don't know whats the fuss over the "painted necks"... you do understand that there's a coating... you don't actually touch paint... and to me its just as fast as a natural neck.

bassmonkee, if I could get the Nekkid Neck, I would get a Bongo TOMORROW!

You say it's easy? Hmmmmmm... Unbolt it, mask it and hit it? Oil/wax? Done?

I was in Decatur once, (actually had my bass stolen and returned from Club 29) and liked it. Smart folks down there, so it seems. Nice, too.

...and I will beg to differ but that's all good.

on a 'painted' neck the finish that you're touching is, well, a lot different from an oil&wax finished neck.... a LOT different and in my opinion and many others an oil&wax finish is much smoother and faster feeling

yep, except I skipped the masking part. took a little sander to it, then hand sanded down the last bit to the wood, carnuba'd it and Bob's yer Uncle!! :D

I just recently steel wool'd it and did a re-wax, to which Stu Hamm's comment was... "mmm nice, I don't like painted necks either" :p

+1

But I have to admit that natural necks have that "something" in look that I like.

cool, what my ad said is that the job had been done professionally, I have been refinishing and repairing basses and guitars for a little over 20 years now, so I think that qualifies as a professional.

Really good job man. I didn't knew that it was You who did the neck, and I have to say that its fully profesional.
