Would be tough for me to compromise in such a case ... (of course, I don't have any insight on how your company handles something like that).
But, as in most companies, yours will be built and operated as a hierarchy. In every hierarchy there is a chain of command, which runs downhill, and a chain of responsibility, which runs uphill.

I don't know how the job market is in Singapore, but if you have a job...hang onto it...especially during the current economic climate. Do what you have to do until you have another option lined up.

Ensure that your boss' request is properly documented, email letter etc, and that you have proper and complete instructions on what you are to do. Go over the issue with your boss to make your deliver the right message, once you are ok then go do you duty. The documentatio by your boss is to ensure your butt is covered just in case. Goodluck.

stand up to your boss, i did, I got fired though, but am not sorry for it.
I was in a similiar situation, but decided my self respect is more important than money, i'm going thru rough times atm but I'm hoping everything will work itself out.

I've quit two jobs for ethical reasons and have never regretted it, in fact, as eluded to above, it payed off in the long run as I (a) maintained my self respect (b) gained the respect of those around me, including my employers (believe it or not). Both times I got another job within a week, tho I had no idea I'd secure a new job so quickly. Granted the market was different then (it was 2 and 3 years ago respectively) but given the same ethical dilemmas I faced then I'd probably take the same course of action.
Having said the above, everyone's circumstances are different; I can only judge my behavior.

Not sure what your situation is exactly, however, you need to do only what you feel comfortable with. Bosses make mistakes. And I don't believe one should ever be required to something illegal or unethical.

LOL. Yeah, I got laid off back in March. But, in my unique situation....it's been great! I don't even want to go back until the summer of next year, or until things get a whole lot better out there.

all depends on how you deal and respond to the life events.
Irrational beliefs (that is the term used in psychology) like "I do not deserve this" or " life is not fair with me" , "things MUST be this way ", etc are most of the time followed by some expectations from the events and people in relation with you, and this generates negative emotional responses like anger, frustration, fury, etc
having this chain , you end up having a behavior that is not well adapted to the life events.
for sure life is not fair and so on....but what can you do? most of the time you can't change the events so all you can do is work on your way of thinking
society and economy are focused on PROFIT...it is not for the good of people.
organizations hire people to generate profit , not to make you happy (although there are many where people are respected and enjoy their job)
in essence if you go further... who said you have to feel good at work? , it would be desirable but it is not a MUST.
I don't want to have a very long post so if it helps we can talk on PM

This is bout my boss not giving my subordinate the boot for doing something wrong! And she want me to work things out with this suborb. Ridiculous?? Yup, things like this happen, bcos some bosses will risk jeopardizing the system for some immediate gain from someone more "capable" who is working at the lower hierarchy.
After much thought, I decided to throw in the towel, and offered to handover my position to someone more capable. End of career for me? Lucky no - My decision has actually forced my boss to rethink the way she has done things, and she is putting my decision (to step down) on hold, and to work things out herself.
Moral of the story, like what all you guys said - evidence, records, and most important - DIGNITY and INTEGRITY.

Whoa, this must have been a really tough decision, at least on your part!
Now just hope for the best: if this works out alright (as it should), it will be a become win-win-win-win situation. Your sub, your boss, yourself and last, but not least the company will take something positive from this. Using your words, dignity and integrity: these are vital parts of a companies' spirit, and after all, success.

all this talk about ideals and morals is nice...i feel the same way but somewhere along the line i realized its better to be happy at the cost of right as opposed to the reverse. that may or may not help your situation but in the state of the economy sometimes you gotta do what you have to in order to do what you want to.

Good for you...you only have your integrity once.
And on the practical side of things, if your job does come to an end, who's going to help you find your next job: your unethical boss, or all the people you've treated honestly and with integrity along the way?

I am not taking a complete risk of losing my job here.
I offered to take up a higher role on management's request. So this is a question of whether to step down, turn down the wage increment and to return to my normal job duty.
Yes, all of you are right. When it comes down to survival, intregrity and stuff can always take a step back. But somehow I believe, for an organisation to stay and grow, dignity and perseverance is what required of its people (capable people I mean), in the long run.
It definitely was Steph! Lotsa talk with the wife, lotsa thoughts, pre-empting.. You wanna play the cards well, but at the same time the outcome is a 50/50. We are living life each day, and we have the power to decide the days to be good or bad. My heart wins over my mind this time.
