I was at the Philadelphia Convention this week and came across an absolute beauty!! It's a new 2011 color "Retro Burst". Instead of the tobacco burst, this one fades from a deep brown (instead of black) into orange. The rep from MM told me that it's nicknamed "Old Smoothie" for being replica'd from the first Stingray ever made, or so the story goes.

The neck is absolutely stunning. I am thrilled for this to be my first MM product, considering I had a tobacco burst on order from a local store. Might have to change those plans hehe.....

Oh and did I mention...this bass is a one-off. The color will be available to the public, but the neck was a custom design from what I was told. And what a neck it is!!

Here's some pics!!!

very nice bass sir. any way you saw any of the other colors that are coming out for the classic?

I did see some of the pearl blue (?) that was being talked about in another thread on here. It looks nice, but not really the color for me. The other new color I saw was a dark red (maybe a hint of sparkle in the red) with matching tortoise-shell pickguard and a maple neck. It was nice, but alas, no pics :(

The rep said the new colors should be able to be ordered in spring 2011. And I have to say, this Ray is playing like an absolute dream. Playing is just more...FUN with this bass.

Somewhere I have photos of the original "Old Smoothie" which Sterling has.

From memory, that finish is very much the same. Nice score!

My tobaccobursts do not fade from black - they are dark at the edges but it's dark brown then fade to light brown, even yellowish in center. I think I do like yours better though - black to dark brown being my favorite.

Nice Score!
