I learned a lesson a few years ago. I was gigging on the weekends and started leaving my 4x10 cab in my car 'cause it was a hassle to lug it upstairs to my apartment. Dumb. My car was broken into and the 4x10 was stolen as well as an expensive SLR camera.

It's a sickening feeling to get robbed.

What was said above was perfect. No help if you're not home....and if you are, most people, most good and normal people, no matter how much time they've spent at the range killing little paper guys, are not really prepared to shoot another human. That hesitation can get you hurt or worse.

Plus, yeah, the gun laws in NY are restrictive.

But we're talking about burglars, who are thieving and cowardly and not looking, generally, to confront anyone in person. Looking at Joe, I wouldn't want him whoopin' up on me!

So make it as difficult as you can, Joe. This goes for all of you guys.

And document your gear and GET INSURANCE!

I've got 110lbs worth of yellow lab. Not much gets past him and he really doesn't like strangers coming to his door. Sweet boy when he knows you're ok, but got help the burgler that comes near the place.

Seriously, I thank God I've never yet had to deal with that. Aren't there small alarm devices you can afix to your windows that are cheaper?

An alarm is the best way to protect when you aren't home. Not sure about how to protect when you are home. I lost an uncle to some meth heads that decided to rob him. They killed his dog too.

Thanks guys for all the concern and suggestions. As for what I can do to prevent it from happening again, unfortunately I'm a bit limited. I only work during the winter (substitute teaching), and since Bumblefoot has been doing GnR and The Nerve! has pretty much seen it's last days, I'm not earning ANY money whatsoever at the moment. I stuck a harwood shelf in my window for now. I'm pretty sure it's impossible to open again. I'm going to get some 2X4s and cut them to the proper size to wedge the windows - the board is kinda unsightly. Not sure what I'm going to do about the winter though because the heat in my apt goes up to insane levels and I keep a window open all winter long. Guess I'm going to have to invest in some sort of alarm. I may shop around today to see what my options are.

I'm not too worried about my basses, although I probably should be. Whoever is doing this I think is looking for quick money - jewelry, cash, small stuff. Unless he leaves through my front door it would be pretty hard for him to leave with a bass. He had to a pretty risky maneuver to get into my place in the first place. My window is seperated by an alleyway (and 1 story drop) that leads to a roof with a small fence on it. He got access through that roof. Not sure how, without anyone seeing. The alleyway has 2 locking doors so he can't get in or out through there.

Arrrgh. Needless to say, I don't feel safe. I went back to sleep after my early morning post, andrea opened a drawer that woke me while I was sleeping and I freaked. My heart was racing at heart attack speeds.

I'm hoping they catch this guy. He's getting either desperate or sloppy, walked into another apartment yesterday while the woman was home. Gonna call the police station now for a reprt number and hopefully an update.

You can drill the window and use the pins or 16 penny nail (as was suggested earlier) at different intervals so that you can have the window open a bit and it's still locked.

Just to clarify. You would drilll the window once on each side and then move the window to the desired level and then drill the casing by going through the hole already drilled in the window.

When the cops came (which was surprisingly fast for NY) there were like 10 of em with their guns drawn, ON ME, telling me to move slowly and show them ID.

They usually do that when they walk in on a nude person....at least that's been my experience.

A little razorwire or barbed wire on that roof would discourage even the dumbest criminal, and would not require you to do nasty things to your window. Even if you nail it shut, I don't think a determined criminal would not hesitate at all to break it . . .

man thats v lucky... there is no way to describe that feeling when you get broken into.

good advice to not get a gun... there are way to many of those things in irresponsible hands through out the world as is.

yeah when we got broken into they were just after cash. took about $150 but id rather that than the camera/tv/dvd/and my bass (not my eb) that they actually moved from in front of the window to get in. my window was pinned at the time, but those drug addicts are skinny bastards. we made sure it was pinned closer after that.

Robbery sucks. It is rape of the home. I hope they don't come back. Find a place to tuck away all your personal info. Nothing worse than having your stuff stolen and then have to deal with getting your identity back. Safety deposit boxes or a home safe are worth it.

The above statement is very true.....even with hours in the range, most military guys are horrible shots when it counts. It is a highly trained individual who can block out the "human" factor and take that life without hesitation....it is not a good feeling.

Joe, you will (pardon this pun) nervous for a while....but, to be honest, a good barking dog is the best deterrent for most burglars of this lowly type.

TK...sorry to hear about your uncle.....really, I hate hearing about things like that.
