My JPMM seems to have some burrs at the saddle causing my strings to break there. I have had this baby for about a year of solid playing time. Will steel wool do the trick to get rid of the burr?

It could do depending on the severity of the burr. I've used steel wool, sandpaper or a dremel- whatever's handy.

Other option if this doesn't work out is to order a new saddle from MM- won't be expensive and then it's 100% perfect.
