My new Axis

My trans purple Axis arrived last night. It is a completely mint 2001 that sat in someone's closet for three years. No fading so far. I love the neck. My problem is with the body. I am a strat person, and am used to the forearm contour on a strat. In playing the Axis for an extended period of time last night, I noticed the edge of the Axis digging into my forearm more & more. Definitely painful and uncomfortable. My question is -- will I get used to this? I have a Les Paul, but this isn't a problem with it for whatever reason. Your comments? I want to like this guitar, but my initial impression is to let it go.

Congrats on your new purchase - sounds like a helluva deal!

I would think you'd get used to it - those LP edges can get pretty severe, so if you can handle that, I wouldn't think the Axis would be a big stretch (I'd think the lighter weight alone would be the deal clincher).

However, if it still continues to bug ya, how about something like this?

Methinks the nice dark Ebony model would look best with a purple Axis, but if you have a Sport/Super Sport with a rosewood neck (like I do), the rosewood one might do the job too...

Hi,

A while back I made a post about different body styles and comfort. I have a Wolfgang Flametop Special and couldn't get comfortable with the sharp edge. I took the plunge and used a cheap rasp to add a forearm contour and a belly cut. I refinished it in red metallic lacquer. It looks great and more importantly, it feels great.

It's a total custom guitar now. Pickups are Fred/Paf Pro combo, frets have been dressed down, sanded wear in on fingerboard edge, moved toggle from top to bottom of body. I think I should sand the Wolfgang off of the headstock and come up with my own name.

Nice!! Although I play a Petrucci, I am a huge Wolfgang fan. Thats a great improvement for the Wolfgang that Peavey should incorporate into the design, with Eddie's permission of course.:rolleyes:
 
Well, if all of this "eddie leaving peavey" talk is true, they'll just rename it the "Greedy SOB" and make whatever changes they see fit... :-)
 
A few years ago, I had a Sil Special that I wish I never sold. What I remember most about the Sil, was how comfortable is was to hold. I have a Peavey Impact Firenza that's also comfortable so I used that contour pattern from that to use on the Wolf.

As far as Eddie goes, he's a complex dude, for better or for worse...

Hey Fiesta -

Nice little collection you have there....is your namesake ESP strat a Series 400 model? If so, whatcha think of it? I used to have a surf green maple neck version w/EMGs many years ago, and it was a great rock/blues guitar.

Definitely held it's own against the Clapton Strat I also had at the time...sold both and a Les Paul Standard in '92 to finance a new PRS Custom 24 - I still have the PRS, but I kinda miss that trio now. I'd probably have played all of 'em more than I ever have the PRS if I still had 'em (although the Clapton would still probably have gone since it weighed about as much as the LP)...

Thank you for your compliments. Yes, it's a Series 400 ESP. It really is a nice guitar. I try to sell it every so often, but then I sit down to play it and remember how nice it is and wind up keeping it. The neck is a soft V with a flatter radius. My main strat is the 62 Reissue Fender. I have as ESP Kamikaze that I don't have pictures of just yet as well.

I had an Axis, same year, same color, with a quilt top. All I can say is, the figuring in the wood may be hard to see at your house, but wait until you get it under the stage lights. The figuring just jumps right out of the paint, especially under a blue or green gel.
 
Fiesta Red ~ That's a sweet Axis; I'm jealous! It looks like you scored a great one...

Al ~ That Wolf looks fantastic with the mods you've made! I remember seeing some "in progress" pics you'd posted on the Peavey guitar forum, and I thought at the time "My God, he's gone mad!", but the end result is really sweet! Well done! (nota: this does not mean to suggest or imply that I in any way want you to do this to my Wolf, however) :D

Thanks Jim. There was a period between the first cut and the spraying, that I thought that I had indeed gone mad. Now that it's done, I really like it. There's a certain "I did this" pride.

NOw for the confesion. Eddie's not going to Charvel. We are going to open up an Eddie/Al Wolfgang custom shop. A small rasp, some sandpaper, and some Krylon lacquer and Bingo, we can start the bidding at $5000.

Dude, nice paint job on the Wolf, it looks a lot like my Fuschia Silhouette Special except without the sparkle.
