Question My new to me 2001 SR5 has a sticky film on the pickguard...

I have one small problem. The guy had the plastic on the pick guard all these years, and after removal, there is a sticky film. Any idea what to use to remove it with? Also the pick guard has more of a mat finish, than my other rays. Was this normal for 2001?

The PG condom has been on it since 2001? The things people do. I'd either (a) remove the guard and use goo-remover or (b) replace the guard or (c) never mind, forget (c), bad idea.

Yes, the matte finish is normal. The sticky goo coating, not so much.

The 25th is one amazing piece. I have been getting to know all of its many tones, but I really am enjoying the passive settings. I think I'm gonna string the SR5 up with flats.

I'd suggest using rubbing alcohol. It works great on breaking down glues of all kind. We used this to remove the residue from stickers placed on guitars that came in on trade when I worked in a music store. Works very well.

I Personally would try some good old WD40 and time first. I've have problems with Naptha and plastics in the past. WD40 has never let me down

Spray it with liberally WD40 and let it sit overnight. The trick is to let the WD40 seep in between the gunk and the guard. Then you can gently rub it of. It might take a few application since you will not actually be diluting the gunk.

I will try something mild like a non bleach based household cleaner first. But whatever you use, take the pickguard off so you can work without risk to the rest of the bass

John, i know syc just told you not to use bleach but i used a clorox wipe to do this same thing on a PG that had duct tape on it for a few weeks. Worked fined. JOSH

Cigarette lighter fluid - works great and you can do it with the guard on the guitar. It won't hurt your finish.

I finally got the chance to clean up the old pick guard. Believe it or not the olive oil with a magic eraser actually worked like MAGIC! I first tried the eraser just with water as directed, but that did noting but destroy the eraser. Now the pick guard looks and FEELS like new! Now I need to get the NEW pick guard. There was a little mix up and they sent me the newer style with the ears by mistake. As soon as that's worked out, my baby will be even MORE amazing. Anyone want an ALMOST new white SR5 3 band pick guard?
