Hey Norrin, I can see your point, so here are a couple examples of what I'm talkin' about.

PRS used to use REAL Abalone inlay for thier birds and such, now it is a thin film.

PRS used to use different tuners, they have switched recently to "Low Mass" tuners.

The new PRS trems are different than the old ones. I believe the old ones were one piece, and the new ones are two.

The neck heel has been extended on the newer ones. The company line on this is that it was done to eliminate a "Dead Spot" on the neck by increasing the mass of the neck near the joint. Some have said that it was extended when they moved to their mass production facility to aid in the production of the guitar.

Now, I'm not saying that PRS isn't a good guitar, but they have changed production methods, and hardware since 1994 when they switched to a production line mentality. PRS claims these changes were made for the better, but if you play a pre-1994 PRS and compare it to a new one, I think you'll notice a difference.

I tried out an Eric Clapton BLACKIE last week. Played it almost 1/2 hour. Stayed clean the entire time. My hand hurt after I was done, and the 3 bass strings sounded awful IMO.

This is my pet hate with guitars - I hate when the bass strings sound dead. I like my guitars to sound bright, even when the strings are not at their best - on my EVH, even when the strings are really bad and ready to be changed, the low e sounds bright - when I'm looking for a new guitar, I don't even plug in unless they sound responsive unplugged,

I switched from an Ibanez to my EVH about 10 years ago. Mostly I was tired of the tone I was getting, so I tried an EVH in a local Satan Center on a whim, just to see what kind of guitar Ed's (then) signature axe really was. At the time I thought it was the ugliest guitar I'd ever seen. But man, the tone. It sustained as well as a Les Paul, had way better playability than a strat, and was elegant, rock-solid, and simple. And, that distinct middle-switch-position tone (both humbuckers) I've since gotten addicted to. They had the same amp setup that I owned at home there and I a/b'ed the EVH against my same model Ibanez, and there was no contest.

While I was playing the EVH, there were about 5 people eyeing it. It was the only one in the store that day. Told the sales rep I'd pay cash for it if he held it for me for one hour. An hour later, "mine all mine." :D

Sucks that EVH left EB, but I'm really glad EB continues to make the Axis. I'll probably snag one just to have as a backup.

Hey Kids
PRS makes fantastic guitars, period. We all have nothing but love and respect for paul and his team. I would prefer it if you didnt throw stones, but some companies deserve it, not Paul's.

I think I'm misunderstood. I'm not throwing stones at PRS, just to clarify. I said that they were better than Fender or Gibson (maybe "top of the heap" wasn't the best term)

I was just trying to give examples of how they have changed over the years. They make a far superior guitar to any other production brand. I don't consider EBMM to be a "production brand" per se, because they are made by the order, and not produced in numbers.

I consider using the cheaper components that I sited in my above post as a build quality issue. That's not to say that the guitars that they make have problems, but just that they are different than they used to be. Even with the newer components, PRS is still better than the other high priced standards.

I've owned PRS, and I would still own one if it were comfortable for me to play. I thought that it was a great guitar. (1994 Custom 24) It's just not the guitar for me.

Again, I've got nothing against PRS. After re-reading my earlier posts, I can see where there may have been a misunderstanding, but I never said they were bad guitars, or slammed them. I hope this helps.

Another reason why I love this company, it's leader(s), and all that contribute!
They're even nice to the competition (those deservenly anyways).
I'm a self-employed person and know that anyone that can acknowledge a competitors accomplishments and stature is a confident accomplished player themselves. Anyone who hacks the competition is usually jealous or has something to hide!
Way to go BP and EBMM!!! ;)

Even if someone comes along and kicks your butt at your job it's still all good. They just made your industry better.

I have played PRS and for me, just didn't feel right. I am extemely picky but the guitar I was trying out sounded wonderful. Just didn't have the feel.

I agree with not bashing PRS. They do make some quality axes and I don't have a bad thing to say about them.....they can be pricey, but, if you want it bad enough, you'll pay.

Comparison of other brands is gonna happen. That is the only way we can gauge what we like and don't like. I am not a fan of Gibby or F**der at all. I haven't played one that I liked. But that is me.

There are some models of EBMM that I don't like the feel of. But, there are other models that suit me just fine and those are the ones I go after.
