I know the active makes all the difference, but i will say truthfully, I love the response of a denser wood, it's heavier, and I like the way the strings feel on it. does that make sense or no?

maybe it's mental?

Ya know, I'd be interested to see an "Ash Fanatic" do a a/b test not knowing which bass was Ash and which bass was basswood. Of course the basses would have to be very close in weight and have an opaque finish. What would the results be?!?! I'm not sure, but it would be fun to see someone eat crow when/if the bongo sounds better when built with basswood. Or what if you send someone an Ash Bongo that is really Basswood and when they get on here raving about how the Ash sounds better-you spring on them "It's actually Basswood-you just got owned mofo!"-Ok can you say PLACEBO? However unlikely this is to happen, It sure would be fun. Don't get me wrong, I love a good piece of ash-but I don't give a damn what a bongo is made out of as long as it sounds anything like the ones I own already-The voice of God comes to mind.

the internet is a chance for some very intelligent people to exchange ideas, and on the other end of the spectrum a place for misguided souls to fire without knowledge or fear of retribution.

I'm trying to decide into which category I fall!

The closed thread "over there" actually started off ugly but had some decent back-and-forth once the more mature crowd chimed in. It is difficult to exchange information and have a conversation based on "Your favorite bass makes me vomit", but once we got through that, it improved considerably. I was sorry to see it shut down, but certainly understand why it happened (based on the initial post).

It's sometimes like the P vs J argument, rosewood vs maple, etc.

One of the problems people face with me being on the forum is that if I think someone is wrong or unreasonable I dont corporate speak them.

Some might see it as a problem. I see it as an opportunity to learn, and only a fool ignores that kind of opportunity.

I dont really care if some dont like the bongo.....

You're so zen. Really, I don't care, either - more Bongos for me! But the amount of misinformation and downright b*llsh!t sometimes motivates me to go insane and try to answer the questions or correct the bad info. Hey, it's my job! I am Lord Bongo!

Heh heh.

as someone who regularly buys weird shaped basses, I often find they get criticism up to the point where they get played - this was recently experienced at a get together of bass players where people were pleasantly surprised by my Bongo, Rickenbacker 4003 (which is another love/hate shape) and Daisy Rock Butterfly (bought because I love to wind up my bandmate Jon, who absolutely hates it ;) )

whether it be music, basses or anything else we all like and dislike different things, and some express their likes and dislikes in extreme terms, I've reached an age where other people's opinions have very little effect on me and I just let it go.

... soon to be the owner of a second Bongo and keeping my eye out for a nice example of a Kubicki

I figure if Dudley and BP say its the right wood for the job then it is - i dont build guitars, i dunno squat about wood.

People have to stop pretending they're experts in a field that they're not experts in ... and furthermore they need to stop spreading bogus info and just stick to their own area of expertise. somehow i doubt that will ever happen tho

+1

I am not a Bongoloid, but I have played and listened to them. Anyone who denies that they are a great sounding bass...well, I guess it's subjective, let's just say...that opinion is far removed from mine.

I can understand not liking the look or feel of an instrument. That is very personal. But to denigrate an instrument of obvious quality and innovation, especially if you haven't had the privilege of playing one, well, that's just juvenile

What purpose does this serve? I don't give a flying fig what anyone else thinks, and neither should you!

At the end of the day, I think people who do this are often insecure with themselves, their playing or, perhaps, the size of their equipment (not to get too Freudian on ya...) ;)

As "they" say, "Opinions are likes a$$holes, everybody has one... and some really stink!"

I like Bongo's and I don't even have one yet, and I never thought they looked that strange or different. It's the sound, and besides I’ll always be uglier than any bass I hang around my neck.

I was playing my SR4 last night, other nights I'll play something else, and when the Bongo comes it will be added to the mix. I like variety and as long as you have really good basses to choose from you can't go wrong. I'm sure the Bongo will be in heavy rotation once it arrives, but the StingRay 4 will always get a lot of attention, right now it's my favorite ax.

As far as the opinionated blowhards that bash the Bongo, wise up, nobody likes you…

I am still thinking about that one BP. Would that be before or after rigamortis has set in?

Heh--I just got to it. It definitely brought a chuckle. I like it, and I plan to steal it for future use.

I was fairly involved with that thread trying to present an objective view. I had to stop myself from posting a couple times because I got inufuriated by the idiocy. Then I remembered that there were really just a few trolls and no matter how logical, or how many facts I could present, it wouldn't matter. Kill 'em with kindess I guess.

The Bongo is simply a state of mind. Like you said, Jack, you either get it or you don't (I don't get the Rumblefish but I do appreciate them and their sound). That being said, you don't have to "like" the Bongo's looks to like its sound and playibility. If you can't get past the looks that's ok, but evaluate the bass, AS A WHOLE, on its total package (again, I bring up the Fish, don't like the looks, but they sound and play good.

Well I'm realy glad the Bongo was born approximately coinciding with the demise of the Rumblefish. I was trying to get a Brad Houser Rumblefish [pretty much their HH version] just when Naylor quit the bass making biz. Then along comes this other equally doofy looking bass, the Bongo. Whole different design approach but there's more than one way to skin a grape. My Bongo, for my purposes, is the Rumblefish I never had. The king is dead. Long live the king.

I love the fact that each and every day goes by someone eats their words regarding the Bongo and we never rub it in.

This was my favorite line of your post. Something a little ironic in that statement, doncha think? :)

I'm toying with the idea over at TB to simply post the pic of me or my girlfriend in response to any Bongo thread from here on in. Either that or just post "BINGO, BOINGO, BONGO". Just to be annoying.

PS. Thank you for the Jack LaLanne forum award and pic. :D I graciously accept.
