My Stingray 4 buzzes ?

I thought it wasnt earthing (grounding) properly, so I took it in under warranty but they said it was something which stingrays just do, they put isolation tape all under the scratch plate, as well as around the pickup, and in the electronic cut out, but it still buzzes.

Is there any solution to this or is just something they do ?

It only buzzes if I dont touch anything metal on the bass, ie eq knobs, bridge, strings etc..

By any chance are you playing this bass in front of your computer or tv while they are on??? If so there is your problem.

No, I have also thought this, however my stingray 5 does not have any problems at all, its very odd.

Try plugging a set of headphones into your Bass and see if you have the buzz coming through them. If not the I suspect your lead or power amp. Still sounds like a grounding prob to me.

This has come up before...from memory an earth lead had come adrift on the pre-amp in the Bass (??????). However, playing around with it may void the warranty.

You may have to contact Mr Ernie, at Ball, direct.

Yeah I think its definatly grounding, I am from brisbane as well, got the 4 string from allans, and madona's said its just something that happens, is this correct ?

IMO...Crap!!!!!!!!! CRAP CRAP CRAP. They wouldn't have a friggen clue (IMO). Quiz the guy who told you that...throw in the words "Capacitors" "Resistors".......Ask him his quals.....you'll get a full stop.

Nip the matter right in the bud......Get onto Mr. ERNIE at BALL...customer Service Dept. Send a direct email.

Well, they did do a fair bit of work, they put isolating tap all under the scratch plate, around the pickup, and throughout the EQ housing, as well as earthing (grounding) the pickups, and the noise is still there.

So its kinda weird.

Perhaps I went a bit too far there. But, it's hard to accept there reply:

"its just something that happens"

I see red when I hear those words. I've been told similar things in the past so many times (not by the people you went to) which have turned out to be matters that do need proper repair.

In relation to your prob...I can accept that some instruments are prone to noise. However, your case seems to be more acute! I'd certainly be looking further for the cause.

In addition to my mentioning the case of the adrift pre-amp earth lead (above), another possible cause comes to mind which has been mentioned somewhere before...in another Forum...I think. From memory, the input jack on the Bass was not the normal garden variety that you can get from a local electronics store. I seem to remember (can't be positive) that the jack was an enclosed plastic unit with multiple connections from the pre-amp. and the guitar lead male jack wasn't making a proper contact with the connections inside unit.

Perhaps, what I'd try first is to use a little contact cleaner...WD40. Spray a little on the shaft of the guitar lead jack and plug it in and out of the Bass jack several times....it may be just a dirty contact inside the unit.

Should that fail then Email EB. They may be able to give you an answer straight away. They have an excellent customer support.

Are you sure that WD40 thing isn't going to harm the electronics or the hardware? I treat my bass like it's made out of gold and I don't want anything to happen to it... But I am desperate. It's just not nice that your bass is buzzing when you don't want it to, right?
I played another StingRay before ('93), and it didn't buzz whatsoever. I don't think it's the battery either, because this bass is factory direct (remember), so it would be strange if the has battery already gone dead.

My new SR4 3eq does this too. Especially near lamps with variable dimmer units on them.. goes away whan you touch it. Easy to get a tech to look at it, but it is new, so surely it should not have this problem??

This is an old thread.

Mains wiring will interfer with the preamps especially if it's within proximity to dimmers and fluro lighting.

No matter how well the preamp is shielded, nothing will stop that.

Don't let a "tech" touch your Bass. There's nothing wrong with it

Thanks. Yes, it is an old thread, but it came up when I used search. I will happily not let a tech touch it, and am happy to accept there is nothing wrong with it.
