Have you tried EB Groups IIIs? Oh. my.

They STILL have bite for a few months, but then they mellow out.

It's almost like mixing the old with new. Incredibly powerful pre-amp with a more warmer old school string.

They are also a reasonable price for flats as well. In fact, pretty cheap.

Instead of cutting the mix you will provide more of a thump and kick

Honestly, ...I'm very pleased with factory slinkys, ...but as I got so good experience with EB Cobalts on my reflex, ...I bet that first restrung of my new Bongo will be with Cobalts for sure!

I have Cobalts on my PDN Bongo. I had flats on it for a time but switched over. The flats do sound very good and with the power of the Bongo you get plenty of drive.

I'll never put flats on a fretted bass, ...but Cobalts will be on the Bongo as soon as factory strings "die".

keko.. you must try it on the mighty bongo!
at least once! its like i say to my kids, if you havent tried it, how do you know if you like it or not
(it never works with them, but maybe i have better luck with you )

I tried flats on my Bongo 5H and I actually really liked it. I loved the thump and extra bass power. I also love that silky smooth feel of flats and they seem to encourage a slightly different style of playing as a result. That said, when I tried Cobalts I felt that they give you a very similar extra bottom-end thump but also have all the bite (and then some) of regular round wounds. So, yeah, I definitely think flats are cool....but the Cobalts kind of give you a blend of both worlds to some extent. I love them. And you can always dial down the treble with the tone controls to give you a flat-like tone.

Anyway...that's my two cents.

Congratulations on your new bass Keko - I will reiterate the comments about flats. Got them on Classic Ray and sound fabulous. I played a gig with this bass with Aeroplane by RHCP in the set - and yes, tweak of the EQ got a decent sound for this - tweak if EQ and playing style - back to 60s vintage pop sound.

Unfortunately my older son play the guitar, not bass, younger son is more sport guy, my wife play piano and sing, ...so I'm gonna use it as long as I can press the strings with my fingers!

Beautiful bass. I still have the factory strings on my Bongo 5H fretless PDN. I've tried flats on my Bongo 5HH but went back to roundwound. I like the cobalts and slinkies on it. A fretted Bongo H is in my future (just not sure how far out).
