Two huge influences to me. Not that I play or sound anything like either of them, but after doing a lot of listening and watching vids of both of them. I see a whole lot of similarities in their styles and in their tones. I'm not saying they're clones of each other; I just see a lot of the same things in each other.

Maybe because I like them both so much, I'm just wanting to see them as similar to each other. I just wish Neal would ditch the Gibson and come over to the EBMM side like Ross Valory...

I'm pretty sure that they are friends and that they play together, they both kind of came up in the same era and stuff, so it would make sense.

Both great players in my mind to man. :)

Luke and Neal are two of the best in the business...especially when they're throwing out the blues licks. They sound better than ever!

It's been said before but I'll say it again...Luke's new CD is a killer...just great stuff!

Which EBMM is Ross playing now?

I LOVE Neal Schon, he is fabulous! Love all his work over the years. I agree that he and Luke have lots in common, there was a time when i thought he and Luke were the same person, so similar their guitar styles can seem, especially in the 80's with all the session work they did.

No doubt about it...two of the best in the music business ever, and two of my biggest influences...both very soulful players with a great sense of melody. One thing that I've admired is that their playing and approach to songwriting is very accessible for even the most casual listeners. (You don't have to be a hardcore shredder type of player to really get into their music). And both remain very current as well.

This is making me want to hear the Infinity disc. Thanks Butch...I haven't heard it in quite awhile...you reminded me how great Neal is on it.

Neal is an awesome guitarist, l esp love his work with Soul Sirkus (just because l'm a major fan of Jeff Scott Soto too).

Like Luke Neal's had some major haircuts in his day. :p:p

Dig the Neal alot here too. been listening alot to his I on U CD. Even though its all POD his sound comes through. Great melody, Schon really has a knack for playing in between the beat and coming up with voice like lines.

One of my favorites by Neal is the blues number ("I wanna know you") on the "Les Paul & Friends" tribute CD. (The vocals by Beth Hart are just amazing, too.) Gives me chills.

Piranha Blues is an interesting album. He was doing the PRS thing then...

I think that one of my favorite Neal Scon solo, and there are many, is the solo he did on Michael Bolton's version of (Sittin' on) The Dock Of The Bay.

Luke's been my all time favourite for so many years now!

I have been listening to JOURNEY a lot for the past year or so and I had the same impression, that Neal's style shows some similarities to Luke's.

He also mixes melodies with high speed runs a lot, though his sound seems thicker with more punch and low end than Luke's (2008).
I just LOVE Neals outro solo on "Who's crying now", that shows his style and sense for great melodies in a nutshell.

JOURNEY have just released a new album with their new singer, Arnel Pineda.
On Disc 1 of this record, there's some great new material and on Disc 2 they have re-recorded a lot of their own classics. If you dig Neal, you will LOVE this album!

Maybe one day EBMM will build a guitar with a set neck and convert Neal into a fellow knucklehead :p

Yep, I picked it up a couple of weeks ago. It's what spawned this thread. As for EBMM building set-neck guitars? Neal has a ton of Strats and uses them quite a bit. I always like the one he used on the "Hear-N-Aid" project. It would be interesting to see what an EBMM Neal Schon signature guitar would be like.

Yeah, I also have a Journey DVD from a Concert in Houston in 1981, where he plays a Roland/Ibanez Synth Guitar extensively that looks a lot like candy apple red Strat. I just think he seems to prefer set neck guitars most of the time nowadays for some reason.

I remember the Hear'n'Aid project, that seems to be the Strat he's been using since the early Journey Days. He uses it on the aforementioned DVD as well as on a DVD from a 2001 Concert in Las Vegas with Steve Augeri fronting Journey.

Neal has some preference for the Fernandes Sustainer. Since Luke also has one or two of them on his guitars:
maybe EBMM could come up with a Neal Schon/ Steve Lukather crossover model with a sustainer already built in?

I suggest to call it the SCHLUKE ;)
