I just received a brand new neck from USA Custom Guitars. The back of the neck and headstock are raw wood. It needs a finish. Old threads regarding neck finishings suggested either tung oil or better yet, gun oil. So I went to Wal-mart and in the gun section found,Birchwood Casey Tru-oil, Gun stock finish. It reads that it's unique blend of linseed oil and natural oils dries fast and will not cloud, yellow or crack.

This sounds perfect. But after purchase I find a warning on the back of package that states that this product contains a chemical known to cause cancer and birth control or other reproductive harm.

This is the stuff that is recommended to finish necks???? Will I get cancer by breathing it on application or running my hand up and down the neck while playing???

What shall I do????Are all gun oil finishes the same??
Thanks.
This is for a P bass that I am building.

I imagine the warning is required by state or federal law.

Being a lawyer myself, I see it as an excellent way for a company to say...if you get cancer, don't sue us because we gave you the warning!!!

In a nut schell, don't worry about it unless you drink five bottles of it a day or add it to your pipe tabacco :)

After you put on enough coats of Birchwood Casey Tru-oil, Gun stock finish (a little at a time, let dry, another coat, color to taste) Follow it up with Birchwood Casey wax. I don't think walmart carries the wax though. It was tougher to find. I did it to one of mine and the results were astonishing.

I got the gunstock oil from Wal-Mart, like I'm sure that most of the folks here did, etc. As far as the wax, I had to head a little bit down the road to Sports Authority. Birchwood-Casey also sells it on their website -- www.birchwoodcasey.com -- no dash like in the EBMM FAQ! (working to get that updated) Off topic, they have a pretty cool shooting game there too (you can shoot a turkey target...kinda cool, but whatever :p)

I've got 3 things to make note of here:

1. Ventilate area as much as can, as this stuff STANKS! (opened windows on a windy day, and big room circulating fan on high)

2. I put a rubber glove on the application hand, because the gunstock oil gets on your skin and pretty much melts to your skin. It took me 3 days to get that stuff off of my hands the first few times (before I wised up!)

3. Anything man-made is not healthy/perfect, however, if above mentioned items are not used in form mentioned, ie. drinking straight from the bottle without at least diluting first :p, or applying to parts of body not suggested by Birchwood-Casey, then the hazard levels can surely increase at that point. If you are using this stuff in some of these type of applications, well...we'd suggest that you just keep that to yourself. :)

I did apply it today but so far only one coat. I need to steel wool it down before another coat. I think it will come out just fine. Thanks for the replies everyone! It looks like the neck on my Sterling..

Go to those big gun store chains (if you have them). For Kalifornians , that's Turner's Outdoorsman.

Or hit the gun shows.
