I've got a new (to me) EBMM coming and I'm thinking of switching the neck pickup out to a humbucker that would more closely resemble a p90 or even a single coil.....so, vintage in character but capable of handling distortion well, and not thin sounding.

The candidates so far are: 1. Dimarzio EJ Custom 2. Dimarzio Humbucker From Hell 3. Dimarzio 36th Anni PAF 4. Seymour Duncan Phat Cat 5. Dimarzio Bluesbucker - in no particular order.

The pickup needs to be humbucker in size, needs to be available in Chrome/Nickel top, and no 60 cycle hum.

Does anyone have any experience with any of these that they would care to share? I'm open to other suggestions as well as long as they fall within the parameters.

Thanks!

I have used the Dimarzio Humbucker from Hell in a few different guitars (not an EBMM) and I have had very great success with that pickup. Do not let the name fool you, its not harsh sounding at all but very glassy like. It taps well too if you want even more of a single coil sound. If I had another "project" guitar it would be my 1st choice for a neck pickup. I have also used the EJ custom and I found that one to have a muffled sound when using a good amount of gain but great for clean tones.

1) Call DiMarzio, their customer service is great and you get a 30-day refund/exchange period; and

2) The Humbucker From Hell would be my guess, as well. Very clear, almost bell-like glassy sheen. Nothing gets the low-end snap of a single coil on the wound strings, but overall it's very close in a 'bucker format.

"Life's too short for a neck pickup!!" I bolted down my pickup toggle switch. Couldn't get one that sounded just right,
e.g., like the bridge, with just a digit of the tone knob rolled back. I called DiMarzio and he said doesn't know of any suitable.

Although the Axis has a nice neck pickup for those wanting one.

It's "pedal to the metal"!!

I feel the exact opposite. Luv my neck position. I'm selling off a Strat to get this Ball, and I play mostly the neck single on the Strat. I have an extra set of the Axis pickups to fall back on (which might happen), I'm just looking to create something a little more "mine" than the stock setup. Mostly a little brighter and snappier in the neck position, but bridge is going to be hard rock and metal geared!

Also, does anyone know if the Al HH pickups are considered chrome covers, or are they nickel? Or is there a difference?

I Love the sound of my ASS neck pup. It is a really fat warm sound nothing like anything I have heard before.

They are chrome covers in the AL HH. Nickel has a little different of tint to its color.
