Hello fellow knuckleheads,

As a happy owner of both the JP and ASS models, I am beginning to think about something with single coils at the neck and middle position, with either a single coil or humbucker at the bridge.

My search has me looking at the Albert Lee or Silhouette models.

Can anyone out there comment on the neck profiles of these two compared to the ASS (I know the JP is an outlier for EBMM guitars with its flat profile)?

Thanks,
Marc

I have a JP6 w/Rosewood neck and a Silhouette HSH. The Silhouette is around 10% thicker and symmetrical and around 1/16 thinner in width at the nut. Switching between these guitars is effortless as they are also both 24 frets. Cheers.

I haven't done the technical work of measuring the necks on them, but I'd say going from a ASS to the AL would be the most similar transition... All of them feel great to me and I have no problems with feel between any of them.

I would recommend checking out the AL with the MM90's too... That guitar is a BEAST!

Peace!

Interesting question. I just got an AL HH and have been playing an Axis Sport for about a year. When I switch to my other guitars (Tyler, Anderson) the necks feel huge but the switch to the AL felt like just a minor jump in width and depth. It is not enough that I fell like it affects my playing. They feel like siblings, very close but not exactly the same.

I agree. I have An Ass, had a Silo Special and played an Al. The necks were very similar. They were not the same but close enough that I had 0 issues. For what it is worth and I hat throwing another guitar out there but I found the Luke profile to be comfortable. The neck plus the Ash tells me Al all the way though.

Marc, have you considered a Luke?

The 12" radius is between the JP's 15" and the ASS's 10". The smallish V-shaped neck seems to be one that people either really like or dislike, so you should try one if the idea piques your interest but you have never played one. The neck is narrow side-to-side like the Axis/ASS, but not as massive front-to-back due to the V profile. Not that the Axis/ASS neck is huge, but there is less mass in the Luke neck due to the V-shape.

The Luke has a H/S/S pickup configuration which fits your criteria. Never having played them before, I was apprehensive about EMG pickups before I tried a Luke. I am a convert now, at least as far as the models in the Luke guitar go.

Something to consider. Try one if you get a chance.

What he said!

I was a bit apprehensive about the Luke neck profile at first as well, but as soon as I played one I loved it. Check out my pictures in my user profile; I've got an image that shows how the Luke profile compares to my other electric guitars; I used the spudmurphy method of a contour gauge to measure them.
