Hey all,
I wanna buy a petrucci guitar but in my country (Israel) they are out of stock and don't know when to expect shipment, they said sept but now they said they aren't sure.
my next choice is ebay but since I can't try the guitar out first i need some suggestions.

I mainly play blues/metal and SOME DT, i'm not a die hard DT fan, but i love petrucci and his solo stuff is amazing, i'm mainly buying the guitar for its features (piezo and all, and if he can play that fast on that guitar, well... i hope i can too one day). does the guitar fit blues ? it sounds fusion like mostly.

Are the woods top-notch grade woods ? I have a warmoth guitar which has extremely amazing 5A woods which are amazing (like Andersons) and i wanna know if the petrucci is built like that.

those are my two main questions, cause if the woods aren't graded that, i'm going for something a bit more steep

Which Petrucci guitar are you talking about? The Ball Family Reserve one? The regular one? Since you didn't specifically say that you were interested in the BFR, well, the regular one is made of basswood, which isn't a highly figured wood, if I'm not mistaken. So, I don't think that there really are grades like 5A or whatever system you want to use.

If you are talking about the BFR instruments, EBMM doesn't rate its tops, because it's really just a marketing tool, and there is no standard top grading system. It's very subjective as well. IIRC, if you want to think in terms of 4A or 5A, etc., well, I think it has been suggested that the BFR tops are around 5A. If you want to find the thread in which this was discussed, use the Search function.

IIRC, the grading of 5A, 3A, whatever, refers to the figuring off the wood. The JP's (with the exception of the BFR's) are basswood which isn't known for figuring. They are offered in solid colours only which would make grading a moot point anyway. In reference to what the guitar can do... I find you can dial in a myriad of tones, save for some country-type sounds (if you want that, get an AL or a Morse) or the sound of a semi-hollow body -- big surprise, its a solid body (hehe).

I use my Pet for absolutly everything

I play a wide range of styles, blues and fusion are also in that list,as well as METAL!!!!

I also use it for jazz, roll back the tone control to near off/bass and neck pickup and bobs your uncle...its there, you can be bop along for hours

It does fusion really well

but if your looking for the neck pup fender strat sound you wont find it at all in this guitar...it has humbuckers :eek:

I really cant say enough about this instrument it does the works

I play in a functions band (as well as other bands) and we cover every field of music,I only use mt petrucci!!!!

its one of thee most versatile guitars on the planet

the new BFR's also have a coil tap so your mileage has been increased even further

thats not to say you cant get it done to a non-BFR Jp

ohh and most folk get them equipped with the piezo's.......so you can also play acoustic too and mix both sounds

THESE ARE THEE BEST GUITARS ON THE PLANET...you get a lot of bang for your buck with an EBMM :cool:

I think the Silhouette Special is a perfect Blues guitar. The Petrucci is better for metal IMO, but the Silent Circuit on the Silhouette Special can give you some incredible blues tones.

Hey Ang3lus,
I'd second Paranoid in that you maybe should try out a Silhouette (Special), too, in the HSS config. For metal tones I guess one might want to exchange the bridge humbugger - mine feature a DiMarzio ToneZone plus an extra AirZone in a replacement pickguard. This combination results in what I do call one of the most versatile guitars ever made.
Have a chance to try one ?! DO IT ! :D
Cheers
Axel

Here's a tip, buy right the first time. Even if it appears to be a little expensive, trust me in the long run it will work out cheaper...

I think your best solution is buy the JP, and buy the Silo Special. :D

Seriously, the Silo Spec can do some good metal sounds with the Virtual Hot PAF in the newer ones. I don't know about the old pickups (PAF Pro?), but if it is a PAF Pro, well, they ought to be pretty good. JP is obviously optimized for the heavier sounds that you want, but the Silo Spec can do a good job with those tones as well. Plus, you have the single coils for those great bluesy, neck single coil tones. And you can have the great single-coil clean tones too. Both guitars are really fantastic.

Additional point, the BFR JP doesn't really have a coil tap in the sense that you cannot split the humbuckers to give you a bridge or neck single coil by itself. The middle position of the pickup selector switch will give you the two middle coils wired in parallel. Plus, the BFR JP has a mode that allows for the use of all 4 coils of the humbuckers at once.

if I could understand you guys when you get drunk,,,,,,maybe!

...dunno whether we Germans are better to understand in English when drunk, but as EBMM's current career opportunities don't include IT jobs in the MS Widdows networking area I'm afraid an application would be pretty useless for me either... *sigh*

Check the for sale sticky thread in the guitar section. Might find a deal you're comfortable with.
I'd feel way more comfortable buying from longtime forum members.
