OK Here's the piezo on the clean channel, Excuse the strap - I am waiting for EBMM strap locking devices!
and all my other straps have straplocks on 'em

Short and simple, but it's just to show you (or let you hear ColinboY) the sound.

I am a proud owner of EBMM Axis Super Sport, and my advice for good distortion sound would be: install an EMG Afterburner on your guitar. That means you 'll probably have to replace your "tone" pot with it, but, honestly, it's well worth of trying. I installed it on my guitar and it turned to a BEAST right in front of my eyes. It works excellent with both active and passive pickups, and is easy to install. Good luck in exploring mean sounds.

If you have a JP, I have heard guitar players (Thiago), just using a Mesa Mark IV A, with a cab, using just the distortion, lead channels, then use a TC G-Force. His sound is excellent. That will be my next rig, along with the JP.

Yep, get a Mesa Boogie Mark IV and call it a day... :)

Unbelievable tone...

I run a TC Electronic G Major in the loop mainly for just reverb and delay and there is really no reason for anything else.

There are other amps out there that sound amazing as well... Cornford, Diezel, etc... (if you're looking for that liquidy high gain sound, Marshall is probably not going to do it for you)

On a sidenote, it seems like there is a really big school of misinformation out there telling people who have no experience with gear to go buy Gibsons and Marshalls... I have yet to meet a person (in real life, not on the internet) who plays that stuff that knows anything about what sounds good, or how to play well... (maybe I'm just being a pretentious jerk, what guitar player isn't?) I do not see the appeal of any of that stuff... I hate that British rock sound though... to each his own I guess...

^ woah now - just like BP will not stand vilification of Fenders Gibsons and PRS guitars, I gotta step up to the plate on that one!
I know it's your opinion but as you say each to his own and heres my "own":-
the thread asks for advice on getting a good distortion sound.
You telling me that a Gibson Les Paul through a 70's Marshall 50 head and a Marshall 4 x 12 wont give you a good distorted sound - thats all the likes of Kossoff played through (plus his Orange of course). If ya can't get a good distorted outta that then there's something wrong somewhere. I had that very rig in the 70's (see my avatar aside - oh maybe not!) and people couldn't believe that I didn't go through a pedal.

Now if it's high gain bee in a jam pot sound you want and thank god that hasn't been associated with the "British Rock sound" then you won't get it from a classic Marshall. But really, dissing one of the greatest set ups in Rock history, inferring that it will not give a good distorted sound - shame on you sir!! - pistols at dawn I say.

You may believe that a Gibson through a Marshall sounds great (I'm sure there are plenty instances of this... not my style of music but whatever) but obviously this kid is not happy with the Marshall sound... and since he's playing a JP, we took a wild guess here and figured that he might be looking for something similar to the JP sound... which will not be had by a Marshall, not to any really satisfying degree at least... unless you just use the thing as a power amp with some external preamp... and even then with those ELs it's still going to be hard to get away from that gritty, fizzy dirty sound that they produce...

Don't take offense just because I don't like your gear... you can hate my gear all you want, its ok with me, obviously we like different things and that's cool... I was just trying to backup a suggestion that I think the guy might be looking for... (instead of looking for a pedal to make that Marshall sound like a Mesa [which most likely doesn't exist, aside from just putting a Triaxis into its power amp input or something]... we're throwing out a suggestion that could potentially save him a very long time searching for tone, simply check out a Mesa Boogie if that's the sound that he is looking for)

If he's looking for something along the lines of the JP sound then you guys may be doing him a bit of a disservice by promoting the British gritty sound here... I've seen many kids go buy Marshalls because they didn't know any better, and they were either unhappy with them or they simply sounded like crap and didn't realize it... the amp was not for them and the style of music they were playing.

British crunch and American high gain are 2 very different sounds.

[Just my 2 cents]

So my question for the OP is could you elaborate on the type of sound you're looking for? What artists have a sound similar to what you're trying to obtain? etc...

I didn't say that you were dissing my gear - What have I got, oh yeah a Marshall Silver Jubilllee. This was great in it's day and paid my bills for quite some time.I guess you know that it was liked so much by Slash he begged Jim Marshall to reproduce it - which he did. I bleeb Steve Morse also had one as part of his back line for quite some time too - I suppose that you'd be saying his tone sucks -I think not.

The Mesa F50 I have is a more modern amp and IMO better than the Marshall (in the same way as I hope that a modern Ford would be better than a Model T). It's not a bee in a jam jar but reproduces clean and bluesy tones - everything I need so I won't be looking to swop it. I guess I could get the bee in a jam jar if I want by emulating it with the Pod and running it through the power amps of the Marshall or Mesa.

Isn't Colinboy looking for a Metallica sound not a JP sound ?- that's what my Irish Celtic cousin says in his initial post!

Now if you pop along to the Metallica site it says that a Marshall plexi was used for a lot of the solo work by Metallica. The Marshall used by Colinboy is a little different to a plexi isn't it!
I don't want him spend big bucks looking for the holy grail when he may be able to get it with the set up he has and maybe something like a BB pedal as posted by Norin Radd and myself.

What I did take exception to was there is a really big school of misinformation out there telling people who have no experience with gear to go buy Gibsons and Marshalls... I have yet to meet a person (in real life, not on the internet) who plays that stuff that knows anything about what sounds good, or how to play well.. sorry, but that statement is utter rubbish the same as your dig against the British Rock sound and I don't think that's just my opinion.
I'll just go enjoying that sound listening to the likes of Free, The Who, Led Zep, Thin Lizzy, Rory Gallagher, DeepPurple et all knowing that there are some people in this world who thinks that "Their sound sucks"

just a side note about metallica... they've been using boogies for many years now (mark iic+, mark iv, triaxis...)

the early early metallica tone (back when their tone sounded crappy and juvenile [IMHO but just because they are metallica doesn't mean that everything they do is golden]) can be attributed to marshall

the tone from and justice and for all and beyond is pretty much all mesa from what i understand (correct me if i'm wrong)

so if you're looking to sound like metallica, chances are a mesa will do a pretty good job :) (and i can verify this with my mark iv)... but there are other great amps out there as well... and i'm sure there may be some modded marshall amp out there that maybe i would like... you could search forever and find some rare, vintage marshall from 1400 or you could go pick up a mesa (or another fine amp) and get exactly the tone you're looking for out of the box with one of the standard models

anyway, i am also biased towards modern day recordings and modern day amps... i used to love black sabbath way back before i started playing guitar and getting into music production... i absolutely cannot listen to paranoid anymore, that album is an atrocity... thanks for paving the way... time to throw that album out though to make room for new music

and again... just because we can name pros who use such and such piece of gear does not mean that the piece of gear is the greatest thing ever... i think we can all agree that quest for golden guitar tone and selling massive amounts of albums are two entirely separate animals... you'll find that the majority of the fanboys of all these bands we're talking about above are not guitar players

gratz to everyone being happy with whatever amp and guitar they play... lets allow the OP to tell us what he's looking for so we can try to help him out

Oh well, the next PM I get saying "Hey Spud let me know if you're ever selling that little Marshall" - I'd better bite their little fanboys hand off.

I don't think that Colinboy or I for that matter would want or indeed be able to afford one of the really old Marshalls - there was one around my mates shop and it went for a fortune - it sucked. Another acquaintance of mine, and I hope you don't mind me referring to another old pro, Kenny Driscoll who used to play in Lone Star in the 70's has "The Governor" which belonged to Jimi himself - I tell ya what - that Marshall doesn't suck, but there again it is modded and would probably cost you the same as a small house - nice distortion though Colinboy ha!!!

You've hurt me again - Black sabbath and Paranoid were my favourite albums when I was growing up - I even bought a Paranoid cd a couple of years ago to replace my scratchy vinyl.

Bearing in mind what you said about Metallicas current gear requirements, I see that Kirk Hammett is quoted as saying that he doesn't like much distortion these days - I guess the juvenile has grown up and indeed his music moves onwards and upwards, so I've been told.

oh my god what have i started??????abig heated debate on guitar amplification.
this sure is only long thread and has stirred people and their taste in gear.thanks for all yer replies and hey spud murphy my old pal who helped me post pics on the forum i agree with ya about the british/irish rock sound from the likes of rory gallagher(genius) thinlizzy and the who.also led zepplin.
i mite add that the very talented guns/velvet revolver guitarist slash is also a classic british gear player with his gibson and marshall(although british born).

anyways guys i am playing guitar for the last 13years.only in the last 3-4yrs have i been playing properly due a nagging DESIRE inside (that wont go away) me to actually play the instrument properly.i am alover of all types of music ranging from metallica to gnr, velvetrevolver to the solo gods such as satch and in the last 2yrs when i discovered MR JOHN PETRUCCI and DT when a buddy of mine recommened amusicman after buy astandard jp6 in the usa on holiday.i originally played a lespaul through the marshall as i was advised again by someone.
i also bought the ME50 Boss fx board with the marshall coz i was only playing at home and it did and still does the trick for home use.then in the last 12months i decided the lespaul wasnt the guitar that would be flexible inplaying all the different styles that i like plus its heavyand awkward for practicing.i fell in love with jp and his technical stlyes of playing and his guitar tones and so i went straight to the top for the BFR JP6.
i am currently looking to take my playing out of my bedroom and am going to setup aband.i found an excellent teacher who i think will teach me properly and help me reach my potential as amusician.
at the moment i am using troy stetinas books which are excellent.im trying to learn sandman by metallica so thats why i started this thread.
sorry for the big essay on my lifestory just said id share with you guys my current level and am hoping to learn as much as i can from fellow guitar players like yourself so i can reach my full potential as amusician.
cheers guys.

P.s i will buy a mesaboogie in afew years when i can afford one.
