My uncle passed away several years ago, and I was given his Music Man bass. I took care of it but my idiot friend(isn't anymore) busted it up a bit. I was just inquiring about fixing it.

My main questions are these:

What is the thing on the Low E string tuning peg that allows the tuning to be changed? It's a little lever. I don't know the name.

One of the tuning pegs was busted, the way it was busted though was lucky. It is like a fork, and one side bent out, but the tuning peg is still attached. Can I get this repaired without replacing it? My uncle always insisted on keeping things how they are, I don't want to replace it.

And finally, when I plug it in, it will not pick up any sound, unless I turn on distortion. (I ran it through my guitar set up, but the guitar set up goes through a bass head.) (I had it going through a BOSS distortion pedal, but I've tried before just going directly into the bass head, and no sound comes out)

I'd really appreciate some feedback. My first goal when I get extra cash, is to fix this bass up without fully replacing the things that are wrong (unless forced to). I feel horrible that this ever happened but I don't know what to do.

hello and welcome to the forum :)

the little lever is probably from a drop d tuner. this means you can detune the e string to another note just by flicking the lever.
Bass Xtenders > Store > Hipshot Products

if the leaf shaped metal bit is loose you can fasten it again by using a plier (and something to cover the chromed material so you dont scratch/ruin it) and closing the gap.

most musicman basses are active so it will require a 9v battery to operate properly.

all these things are impossible to diagnose over the intarweb, so you really should take it to a good luthier to get some help.

ps: no pictures = no bass.. first rule around here ;);)

I was not aware of this rule haha. I have the tuning peg taped and would really like to avoid taking it off, but I will definitely show the bass later on. Thanks for the info guys.
