Need Help

I recently bought a Sterling HS and i have a question. when the Single S pickup is selected by itself the volume is alot lower than any other pick up configuration. Is this normal or is the Single S pickup defective? and if it is how would i fix it?

Welcome to the forum.

That's also the case on my Stingray HS. Can easily be adjusted by using the volume knob. (If you cannot adjust this with the volume knob, you should probably contact customer service)

Otherwise:

I think this behaviour is normal since the S output is lower than the H output.

(Otherwise the preamp had to know the switch setting (which coils are used) and had to use different amplification ratios depending on the relative output of the coils and their configuration (series, parallel, single, multi...))

The single S is lower than the H even when you only have the single coil of the H selected? i do raise the volume when selecting just the S pick up just wanted to be sure it was normal or if some thing is wrong. btw i bought it used and it is a 2006 Sterling HS

Hmmm... check the pickup height, which is described here.

If PU height is ok, and you still think that something is wrong, contact CS.

i will check the height when i get home but i know i have both of the pickups the same distance from the strings. being a 2006 and the fact i am not the original owner i dont think it would be under warrantee but i will call tonight if the height is good.

More/less all told above!

Only what I must add as an owner of the Sterling 5 HS, single S and position 2 when H is split into the bridge single coil (coil 1), should have similar volume output, if pickup heights are correct!

All other positions are much "louder", especially when single H is ON (position 1).

Get use to it, and try to correct volume level with not turning the volume knob always to the end, leave some "reserve" for single coils!, ...or, try to correct volume with playing technique (push harder on singles, use preamp...), but I suggest the first option!

Ok then something is definitely wrong as the single coil from the H is louder then the single S. I will call customer service later today when they are open.

i will post some pics when i get home. it is a Natural Finish with a Maple Board and a Black Pickguard.
