Yes, I'd also like to know the difference in sound. From the DM site, the VP's have a little more bottom end. I'm thinking they may also be tighter or more midrange focused than the PAF Pro?
Less sizzle on the VPAFs....more woody organic tonality. Whereas the PAF Pros are higher output and drive the preamp harder, the VPAFs are more vintage in their approach...they have a lil' more bass too and less treble. I've never been a fan of the high end sizzle that I got out of the PAF Pros over the years...I think they just weren't as balanced as I'd like. That being said I'm also a big Duncan 59 fan and i feel the VPAFs are close. You tend to just hear the note if you know what I mean...I think they're a better match to the instrument too. The Virtual Hot bridge i just put in the BD Silo's awesome...
Thanks, OC. That pretty well describes DM's comparison.
I've read somewhere that the Virtual PAF was designed to retain definition through gobs of effects. Not getting lost in the sauce, as it were. While I currently use no effects, I do notice that the Virtual PAF always cuts through the mix, without ever needing excessive volume, and without sounding shrill or ice-picky.
Have you tried the Virtual Hot PAF yet? A little hotter in the bass and mids, it looks like.
I have a Viirtual Hot in the BD Silo...it's got a little more oomph and a little more heat but it's still a more vintage pickup. Even with higher gain settings it doesn't get that fizzy sizzle alot of the other DiMarzios give you. I'm about to swap all the Volume and tone pots for the magnetic pickups out to 500k's too...so I'll let you know what they sound like at that point, since the stock pots are actually 250k pots...overall they're just really balanced vintage sounding pickups...and they sing nicely too.
