Just for the record, I also prefer the look of the stock pickguard on the CHB. The only reason I swapped mine out is that it's wearing through the metal finish and I don't want it to get any worse. I happened to have a black Sterling guard laying around and was surprised at how good it looked.

I wonder if one could clear coat (or similar) the stock metal finish pickguard to prevent serious wear like that shown in the photo? Maybe I can wear bandaids on my right hand!

Man, this pic is better than what it looked like in real life when I saw it at GC on Labor Day. (For the record, I like the way it looks in real life.)

Here it is-

The color and PG are absolutely stunning- the photos can't nearly do it justice. It's very, very different and unique. The metallic PG gives it an amazing character- it's not quite reflective nor translucent, but has an interesting depth to it. The Copperhead Bronze paint/finish is understated until you get it in the sunlight (or flash as in the first photo), then it again becomes a whole 'nuther character- wild and flashy. Truly a masterful combination. With all due respect, I can't possibly see how a plain black pickguard could improve or enhance this special color.

I was shocked at the nearly perfect condition of the bass- especially coming from a GC where it apparently had been for a long time. It needed a good dusting and polish, but it really is nearly factory fresh. I installed new Slinkys and set it up LOW. In this case, GC made me a believer, and they didn't once call me "dude" or "hey man". The price was more than fair as well.

On an side note, I have to say I'm having a difficult time getting the hang of the string spacing. My first 5'er was the Tony Levin OLP which oddly has a wider neck but narrower spacing vs. the SR5 which has a less wide and more professionally crafted neck. In comparison, I would say the TL has a slightly more "parallel" layout, that is they don't splay out from the nut to bridge as much as the SR5. I wonder if this is what's making the new neck seem more confusing. It seems (after only a few days) that you need to be a bit more manly and disciplined to master the mighty Stingray 5! Any comment from other users on this?

My skills aside, this is one truly stunning work of art. Let me just say that although I got off to a rough start with MM basses a few years ago (what with that pesky "weak G string" business), I now consider myself a convert and own an SR 20th Anniv., a Bongo, and now the SR5. BP's Kool-aid is the coolest.

As for switching from an OLP TL model, I use one all the time as I keep it in my practice room. Then I play my Bongo 5 for rehearsal and shows and have no problem switching between the two.

It's the fifth Sterling I've had searching for the right one and this is it - great tone and pretty lightweight at 8.7 lbs.
