This and Hollow Years are their two best videos. This one seems very... mature. I love the slow-mo plus the black/white shots.

It shows they status as reference... with that I mean, all prog bands are measured by Dream Theater. Same as Metal = Metallica.

My fav song from the album... I KNEW it was going to be a hit!

But the best solo on that album from JP has got to be "The Best Of Times"! I've not heard him play like that in a LONG time...

+1!
The solo on The Best of Times is really great - very melodic, perfectly played and a killer sound!

Damn, now I have GAS for a JP.

I can definitely hear the bass in BC&SL. Like BKRUMME said, if it wasn't there you'd notice. When played on a quality speaker setup, the bass is felt more than heard, which fits the music very well.

Thanks Ralf. Nice to have some support now and then.

As far as the video, I think it's great. The song is great. Dream Theater is great. it's all GREAT!

Of course you can hear the bass ... but personally I like the bass sound (especially when the player is so good) thus I prefer to hear it a bit more in the mix.
On the extra CD with the cover songs, the Maiden cover (To Tame a Land) is nice but really, the bass has to be more present. OK, I admit : I am an old Maiden fan so Steve Harris playing had a huge influence on me.
So JM : bring the noise :D

I understand what you mean. It would be nice if the bass just popped a bit more. I think it's more a tonal issue than a mixing issue...and not really an issue if Dream Theater and JM are cool with how it sounds.

JM is definitely an amazing bassist and deserves to be heard...but we have to consider what Dream Theater is trying to accomplish collectively as well. If that's where they decided to put him in the mix and they accomplished the tone and sound they were looking for, then mission accomplished.

JM's live sound is different from the recording, but are JP's, MP's, JR's and JL's. There are all sorts of tonal nuances you hear live that you don't hear in a recording...that's what's so great about live music.

Nevertheless, the video is cool. It really conveys a message about how they're feeling in their careers. It's a kind of montage of their current tours and what it's like on the road for them. I especially like the shot of MP getting ready to go on stage with their tour manager. He starts smiling and has the most genuine look of happiness on his face. It's inspiring, really. Then there's the shot of JP in the middle of a solo where he makes a "metal face." They look like they're having a load of fun.

I think you are *officially* the first person I've heard that thought the song was weak.

Make it 2 then, I think it's the weakest song of BC&SL, doesn't do anything for me. Nice video though!

The Count of Tuscany on the other hand... Best DT song in a long long time. Scenes from a memory long.

I think Rite of Passage would be better off not on the album :p So there you have more conflicting opinions. I like Wither, though. Simple, but good.

But all of You must admit that the album is great and consistent?!!

Its strong album for me as I havent been addicted to DT since Octavarium and unfortunately I'm not a big fan of Systematic Chaos although it was the album when JP F1 been introduced and the sound changed very much(for better) and still evolving.

i like the song!

loved the album, yes they totally went into a slightly different direction
but I love those guys and their songs!

I just wish JP would at least bring back his Jazz-Fusion-ish vibe on their next album just like on their Images and Words.. (best album for me)

I think its a great song for anyone to listen to..not just guitar players and Dream Theater and prog metal maniacs (like me).

I do agree with you redeleon on the Jazz-Fusion stuff from Images and Words. LaBrie's voice has improved though...doesnt sound so whiney as it used to. Maybe its because of the facial hair going on there? :D hahaha

Add me, I am not a fan of this song! Sounds like any mediocre metal ballad from any band.

It's quite generic, I give you that, but it's very well done, recorded, mixed, etc so I like it, plus it's a break from all the craziness that's happening on the album. Kind of what Vacant was in TOT.

To me the odd song is A Rite of Passage. That belonged more to SC (which I didn't like apart from Repentance) than BCSL.

I really don't mind this song at all, and even though they are my favorite band, I heard Never Enough today for the first time in a while, and I don't really like that song at all apart from Jordan's solo section.

I really liked this song a lot when I first heard it. I really liked what I thought it meant. However, when I heard what it was really about, I didn't like it as much anymore. The concept of writing about writer's block is a bit too much like a creative writing assignment I did in middle school or the freshman year of high school. I think JP did it a lot better than I did, though. :)

I pretty much agree with all stated above too. Sure every now and then a band needs to slow it down and through out a ballad. Not really any acrobatics in it from the guys but its to the point. Could be pretty radio friendly I guess. Thats why I listen to satellite radio though because heard The Shattered Fortress not too long ago on there!
