Ok, here's where this hare-brained idea comes from: Back when I was out hunting for Bongo's, at a certain point I had to decide on what finish to get. I wound up with Tangerine Pearl, which I really love.

I also really love some of the "fancier" finishes--Blue Dawn being one of my favorites--but the thing that always bothers me a little bit about the sunburst-ish finishes, particularly on the Bongo, is that they tend to make the bass sort of fade away at the edges onstage and it becomes hard to see from the audience's perspective. The curve of the Bongo body actually makes the finish get even darker than it normally would.

So what about a reverse sunburst? Like a Blue Dawn or a more traditional sunburst, but that gets darker in the middle and lighter towards the edges? Yeah there's the pickguard to worry about, but there are clear pickguards or maybe the pickguard could become part of the finish pattern even? Whaddya all think?

Not a bassist but a guitarist here... Same principle tho..,

I think aesthetically it just doesn't work as well, bursting into darker frames the object, bursting into lighter just fundamentally gives you... a dot

The color discussions don't get shut down in any official sense. I think everyone feels it's fine to discuss these things, but if you've been around for any length of time, you know that financially successful finishes keep being made and the other kind don't. It's just business.

(And I of course love the oddball finishes.)

Oddball finishes rule! Reverse burst is interesting, I have seen a few in my travels and it's very much a case of each to their own custom job-finish

No suggestion here, but just an observation. Burst
finish is cool cuz you get to see some wood grain
and the shading effect is cool. I have a few EBMMs
and I wish the darker part of the burst kept more
outward toward the edges. There's just extremely
little wood to be seen between the classic oval PG
and the dark finish of the outer regions. With the
huge PG on most SR5s it's even worser.

Again, no need here for a new production option.
As someone who wants to see some wood, EBMM
already has a finish for me, clear or trans colors. I
just hafta wonder why the burst finish hasta cover
the majority of the available wood with the opaque
portion of the burst, and I'm just sharing that with
my brethren here.
