I've been enjoying these new releases:

1) Buddy Guy "Bring 'Em In" Awesome! Buddy rips and you can hear where Hendrix got some of his ideas. Keith Richards, John Mayer, & Santana make guest appearances. I'll see Buddy on Oct. 28 I've seen him many times live. A great performer and living legend. Recieving heavy rotation.

2) John 5 "Songs for Sanity" This guy rips from country to Metal. Albert Lee and Steve Vai make guest appearances. A great shred guitar CD! Also in my heavy rotation.

3) Les Paul & Friends "American Made World Played" Nice all-star package if you like those kinds of CDs. In my light rotation.

4) B.B. King & Friends "80" Another duet all-star package from the king of the blues, but certainly not his best stuff. A couple spins was all I needed, but I collect his catalog.

5) Eric Clapton Duel Disc "Back Home" Includes 20 min DVD interview & four EC guitar picks. Certainly not his best guitar work, but nice pop tunes with a great studio band. Being a single dude, I could do without the baby crying on "So Tired" (I thought it was my cat) and the inside booklet photo of one of my all-time guitar heros strumming an acoustic in Pee Wee's Playhouse.

*6) catching up on the Dream Theater back catalog & JP's solo & duet CDs.

Looking forward to:

1) G3 "Live in Tokyo" DVD & 2CDs (Oct 25)

2) Yngwie Malmsteen "Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar & Orchestra" DVD. This is my favorite CD from his catalog outside of "Rising Force." Buy those two CDs and skip the rest IMHO. I can't wait to see him perform this piece. (Nov 1)

I just bought Progressions: 100 Years of Jazz Guitar box set.
It's totally loaded with unreal players

The last few months I have started to get into Mike Stern and that led me to buy this box set. I was tired with most of the garbage that's jammed down our throats so I figured I might as well open my eyes to some new guitarists. Since my Jazz knowledge was non existent, I figured this was a great place to start.

So far I enjoyed almost all of it, but a few have stood out

Phil Upchurch sounds really tasty

Mike Stern just rips

Plenty of other amazing performances, way too many to mention

I guess I will be collecting a bunch of jazz cd's now

Hey Pug,

this sounds very cool, I'm going to look it up and possibly add it to my Christmas list.

Mike Stern - great player, been around awhile.....I have a couple of his CDs, one where he covers standards.

His wife, Leni Stern (pronouced Lay nee) - is also a fine jazz guitarist as well. She does a lot of gigs in New York with another jazz guitarist name of Wayne Krantz.

Wow, I just looked up the track listing on this--holy smoke what a wide range! That's very cool that they put folks on there like Leon McAuliffe, who is also hailed as a great country guitarist too.....nice that they gave the props to things like the melding of country and jazz by putting McAuliffe in there - western swing (as a genre) was originally known as "cowboy jazz"......

Disc 1)

Already mentioned Leon - wow, Lonnie Johnson, Eddie Lang - both are great guitarists, known widely in blues circles - especially Eddie Lang - he used to also use the name Blind Willie Dunn....the two of them did some really great stuff back in the day.

Eddie Lang also played with a violininst name of Joe Venuti - they were doing a kind of Django Reinhardt/Stephane Grappelli a little bit before those guys came along.

SAm Koki - first Hawaiian guitar guy.....

Charlie Christian - another great. He played with Benny Goodman.

George Barnes - another great guy - that reminds me, I've got a disc of his I should dig out.

Disc 2 -

Wow. whoever put this together did it right. Not only do they have the obvious folks like Chet and Les Paul and Wes Montgomery, there's also Tal Farlow, Barney Kessel, Herb Ellis, Grant Green, Joe Pass! And I see names that I dont' recognize on all 4 discs, and I also see names of guitarists that I have been wanting to check out.

On Disc 3, I love the fact they included more avant garde folks like Sonny Sharrock and derek Bailey. Bailey can play more mainstream jazz, but that guy can REALLY play out in the nether regions....I've heard some real avant garde noise stuff from him.

Oh, and Jim Hall - he put out a live CD set a few years back that featured Pat Metheny that was just amazing.

Pug, thank you for posting this. This is definitely going on my christmas list!

Been listening to a lot of stuff by a guy named Mattias "IA" Eklundh.

His latest solo CD - The Road Less Travelled is jaw dropping.

Also check out his main "band" Freak Kitchen.

Go to www.freakkitchen.com and have a look at the "Nobody's Laughing" video.

No problem, like I said I bought this because I was so bored with the crap that's out now.

I think I'm going to check out Mike Stern at 55 Bar in NYC one of these days, he plays there on a weekly basis. Funny thing is I remember reading about him in Guitar Player years ago (maybe 1987) but I never went out and bought any of his stuff until now.

The jazz box will be on my Christmas wish list, and I need to get the new Eklundh. I have the first one, "Freak Guitar" which is cool. I also want to get the Scofield tribute to Ray Charles.

My degrees are in music, and Mike Stern was brought in for a concert/clinic at the University of Memphis. He's awesome. Check out his performance/instructional DVD to learn more about his style/techniques/gear. I picked it up at GC. He has a very simple setup: Tele copy, Boss compact pedals, solid state combo. visit www.mikestern.org for more info.

This weekend, I'm going to the (classical) Guitar Foundation of America's annual festival at Oberlin College, Ohio. I'll see Manuel Barrueco, Richardo Cobo, and David Tannenbaum over the weekend. I've had lessons with Tannenbaum & Cobo. They're incredible. Visit www.guitarfoundation.org for more info.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions.

Hey Pug,

I know what you mean re; being bored with current mainstream music.....I thought it was just me getting old and cranky, then some younger folks told me they didn't like commercial music either....so I didn't feel too bad.

If you go see Stern, I'd love to read a report on that.....I've never seen him live.

Sheesh.

Between this thread and the 80's music thread, I am totally geeking out. :D
