You lucky devil!

That would be awesome to see, even 20 years later. I love Fish's recording of "Kayleigh" on the Yang album, where it's played a whole step lower than the original recording, and Frank Usher goes to town on the solo. It takes on a whole other personality when played in A minor.

Hey Pug,

I know what you mean re; being bored with current mainstream music.....I thought it was just me getting old and cranky, then some younger folks told me they didn't like commercial music either....so I didn't feel too bad.

If you go see Stern, I'd love to read a report on that.....I've never seen him live.

Sheesh.

Between this thread and the 80's music thread, I am totally geeking out. :eek: :D

Victrola,

I will definitely give you a report if/when I go see Mike Stern. I'm actually going to NYC this weekend for the Music Players Live Show which is like a really tiny NAMM event. There should be some good stuff there (exhibitor wise and performance/Q&A wise Adrian Belew-Pat Metheny-Vernon Reid)and there is even a tribute concert to Les Paul at Roseland on Sat. Night.

Right now I am at work and am listening to:

-Jeff Beck, "Wired"
-Vivaldi Concerti with Eliot Fisk on classical guitar
-"Friday Night in San Francisco" with Al Di Meola, Paco de Lucia and John McLaughlin

Eliot Fisk is an AMAZING classical guitarist. When I heard him play Paganini's Capriccio, I didnt even have an idea that was POSSIBLE to play on classical with finger plucking and all that crazyness. Vivaldi is one of my FAVORITE classical composers next to Bach of course.

The other things that are in my CD PLAYER (freakin probably the only one without these damn iPod creations) that revolove all the time:

John Petrucci, "Suspended Animation"
Dixie Dregs, "Full Circle"
Steve Morse, ALL OF THE CDs
Dream Theatre, "Images and Words"
Joe Satriani, "Strange Beautiful Music" and "Time Machine"
Vinnie Moore, "Meltdown" and "The Maze"
Liquid Tension 1 and 2

DAMN, how did I forget my favorite band DEEP PURPLE!!! "Total Abandon" which is live in Australia is AMAZING and the DVD is the craziest thing. There Steve Morse has one of the MOST AMAZING solos I've ever heard in my life, and I have it all memorized. Now I just gotta learn how to play it :) .

In my car player for the last few days...

Magic Elf - "Heavy Meddle"

Intense Instrumental Rock Fusion, good stuff if you like Dream Theater, Dregs, and Rush. They do a song that's a tribute to The Dregs called "Scrambledreggs". YEEHAHH

marillion-freak:
Fish released two albums simultaneously a few years back (1995):
1) Yin and of course 2) Yang

He does some Marillion songs on each disc, and then mostly his solo stuff. All re-recorded studio tracks. Yang has Kayleigh, Sugar Mice, Lavender, and Punch & Judy. Yin has Incommunicado and Incubus.

I'm so glad to hear someone checked them out. I knew that you would like them based on your posts I've read here.

You can definitely get their discs from their site, not sure about Amazon (probably not). "Elf Tales" is good too, I got them both at a gig, and I listen to them often.

BTW, I am not affiliated with them at all, I'm just a huge fan spreadin' the word.

Scott Henderson Live Double CD

I recently picked up Scott Henderson's new live double CD.
http://www.scotthenderson.net/live.htm

Jaw-dropping playing from one of the baddest guitar players on the planet. Henderson's playing deftly weaves searing blues melodicism with cutting edge jazz lines and a sophisticated harmonic conception, always performed with much passion and serious attitude --- and pretty damn funky to boot. Recorded live in LA last year, with John Humphrey on bass and Kirk Covington on drums and vocals. I can't say I care for Covington's singing, but the band is super tight and Henderson was on fire that night.

The CD is also a stunning advertisement for Custom Audio Electronics amplifers by John Suhr. Henderson uses the CAE OD100 head, and the tones he elicits from the amp are simply mindblowing. The folks at CAE should put clips from the CD on their web site with the caption "Nuff Said."

Cheerios,

-- Sunil

Careful.

- I know lots of people make fun of him - but go back and listen to Rising Force (his first album). He (along with Randy and EVH) set the musical direction for a large chunk of the guitar players that have followed for the last twenty years. rant over. The whole dragons and fires thing is a bit juvenile, but his playing is still incredible.

I love Yngwie.

CD Rotation: I have a one hour commute each way, so I switch between music on CD, books on CD, motivational speakers on CD, and conservative talk radio. Rock radio here in west central florida sucks - Drop-D three chord depression Nu-metal or Trailer rock over and over and over and over (you get the idea)

Dream Theater - Octavarium
Allman Brothers - The Road Goes On Forever
Creed - Weathered
SRV - Couldn't Stand the Weather
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
Muse - (Sorry I don't remember the name of the CD right now)
Brad Paisley - Time Well Waisted
Stanley Jordan - The Blue Note years

Mississippi John Hurt

Another person whose music and guitar playing I've become really enamored with in the last couple of days is Mississippi John Hurt. Relatively subdued but haunting voice with a very refined fingerstyle technique, the late Hurt was a unique figure in American blues. CDs worth checking out are:

* 1928 Sessions
* Avalon Blues (1963)
* Worried Blues

Here's a link to a really excellent article about Hurt:

Lots of great recommendations in this thread!

Cheers,
