My doorbell rings this morning. I rush out of bed and stumble down the stairs in an unconscious stupor. I open the door while rubbing sand from my eyes, squinting in the glorious morning sun as the fresh arctic breeze rushes me back to waking life. I see a man in a baseball cap with a large box. He hands me an electronic screen and requests my signature. I grip the pen and sign my John Hancock sloppily, not really sure whats in this box. Then, as if being struck by a lightning bolt, a sudden blast of realization overwhelms me...is this....could it be...new guitar day????

My heart beat accelerates to the speed of Far Beyond the Sun. The ribcage may explode from its pounding rhythm. A light sweat begins to develop upon my brow. I run to the kitchen and grab a butter knife...a flurry of packaging tape flies upwards, onwards into the domesticized horizon behind me. I pause to enjoy this moment, to relish its sickly sweet pleasure.

From the gaping chasm of cardboard blackness I pull forth a long rectangular case. My fingers grip its brown leather with trembling fury. Click. Click. Both locks undone. Open. Slight disappointment. Its much darker than expected. Chin up, lad. That's just cosmetic, mom always told me that looks don't matter, never judge a book by its cover and all that. I head back upstairs, plug into my amp and start playing. Slowly, a dark, creeping sadness replaces the intense joy. This neck...I cannot stand the finish. I look longingly at my axis supersport. Its birdseyes look back at me, unblinking and sympathetic. I see my own melancholy reflection in the black lacquer of the BFR neck....and I drown in the heavy, sinking conclusion that this just won't do. Having saved every penny from 8 months of dismal labor in a local restaurant, I think back, remembering how many tables I wiped, how many smug customers I politely took orders from, how I scrubbed the cutlery, trapped in a fog of hot vinegar steam rising from that wretched gunmetal stainless steel bowl. My heart is broken in a thousand pieces. I slide the case back into the box and stick "Return to Sender" on its front.

As I've stated many times, I live in a small town with no guitar stores in a 400 km radius aside from the local all-purpose music store that only carries Epiphone and Squier.

Uh, you gave up on it after a few minutes of the same day you got it:confused:

Even I dont give up that quick and I am The Crazy Fingbeagle:)

Give it a day or two at least, then if not for you get one with the maple neck and be happy not the end of the world.

It's unfortunate that your first impression is that of disappointment, but you really should give it some more time. I can't believe the finished neck is that much of a deal breaker. I've played guitars with both finished and unfinished necks...it's really not that earth shattering of a transition.

lol deano

The BFR JP's neck takes a lot for some people to get used to. But once broken in and properly cleaned its super close to the smoothness of an unfinished neck.

All else fails, get the Standard JP it has the maple neck. People think the std. JP is inferior, I disagree, its an outstanding guitar and is just a totally different beast that just might suit you.

There are no EBMM dealers that carry stock in my entire STATE! Closest is 1000kms away. Hasnt stopped me ever. If I havent played a particular model I usually buy off ebay used so if I dont like it I can sell it back without losing any money. If I like it i'll keep it or be assured that when I order a new one it will have no surprises. Seriously, if you thought about it there are ways to not be let down and lose money.

I like your writing.

I have a BFR A.S.S. and I love the neck. I have a morse that is finished with the gunstock oil/wax and although different I like both just fine.

I noticed that sometimes when I wait for something for a while it can go either way on arrival day. I concur with what others have said. Give it some more time. It might not be for you, or it maybe a great axe that you will grow into. Only you can determine that. Good luck with the journey.

Maybe you should have ordered a BFR in a gold glitter finish. Maybe play some tasty blues licks on it.

I will echo what the guys have said. Since most all dealers give you a few a days to decide of you like something or not don't decide in a day. Shot if they give you 30 days give you self a min of 15 days. If after that time you don't dig it return it. The good thing is you will have the cash to pickup another ball. If you find that you love the tone but only don't get along with the neck I have only one thing to say to you. Contact EB and find out what dealers in the country have a JP BFR with the RW BRF neck you will drol and cry because the unfinished all rw neck is a dream and adding that the BFR tone that you already love is a win win win. If you find out you don't love the tone you have so many ither choices including the HH Al Reflex and all the other BFR models that don't have a finished neck. Keep your head up man. We have all had guitars we have not bonded with luckly for you it can eb returned and you won't lose a few hundres $$$ on ebay selling it.

Sorry to hear your initial reaction of disappointment. I suggest the same as some of the other guys. Give it a few days. I know the finished neck is different from an unfinished neck, but the BFR JP's really are super-smooth.

Now, on to the real business. Where are the pics?
