Finally got around to slapping some flats on my Stingray 5 H/H. This is my first experience with flats, besides fiddling with some fretless basses at GC. I must say that I do not like the sound of the bass solo (with these strings). They are much brighter than I expected, but I assume they have to break-in some. I don't dislike them for the brightness, I dislike them for the loss of focus and clearity. Considering what I am used to playing, this isn't a surprise.
Now, I took the bass to rehearsal on Monday night and I thought is sounded great in the mix. I've never played a bass that sounds like that, it sat really really low in the mix and was very supportive. I found myself playing in switch position 1 most of the time, as it added more clearity.
I wanted a different flavor, and this little experiement definitely delivered that.
