Not liking the tort guard that came with my Big Al 5 fretless I bought a white one from EB. I like the way it makes the bass look much better. I am trying to find a white pickup cover for it. EB does not sell them. So I am thinking about buying a used MM 5 with a white cover on it and switching out the black for the white. Here is a before and after pic. Let me know what you think.

I think they both look nice, but my eyes are glued to the fretless board! If I had to choose one or the other, I'd probably do the white one too... That's a killer bass man!

I still like the tort. I agree, a white pickup cover would look great with the white pickguard. Killer bass either way.

As far as I know, the 5 string pickup covers are not removable and are glued on. So, I don't think that option will work for you.

If you really want to be crazy, you could always use some white paint that is safe for plastic. :D

I've currently got tort, black, abalone, and orange swirl pickguards for my white unlined fretless Bongo 5HSP. A black pickguard would look great on the Big AL and give it that classic 70s vibe.

If the covers are glued on then I will not screw with it. I thought that they popped off. I wouldn't paint it either. I am not that crazy. :)

Hi DavidJ,

Beautiful bass - the white guard looks great, but I am a sucker for all things tort, so prefer the original.

How does the single H 5er compare to your experience on the fretless 4 SSS?

Cheers

I generally prefer tort, but I gotta admit- the white really helps the fingerboard jump out at you all the more.

I think the black pickup cover looks great with that combo, too.

Black pickup cover...black controls...mighty nice!

I like the single H better than the SSS. I am from the old school when it comes to Musicman basses. I have always loved the single humbucker.
Thus me owning a classic 4 string as well. Hope your loving the fretless.
