Sadly, I couldn't agree more. Luke is right on the money here:

"Aside from the people who really liked our music, the USA pretty much went nudge, nudge, wink, wink. They put us in the same category as Air Supply. The average rock critic and the casual fan just laugh at us. They don’t give us any credit for what we did."

More often than not, I get the little snicker whenever I mention Toto. It's because most people are too stupid to look a little deeper than what pop radio stations spoon feed them. When they hear Toto, all they hear is 'Rosanna' and 'Africa'. The musicians themselves don't get any credit for their talent.

And here's another statement that just pours out my heart!!!! I am SOOO glad to hear that I'm not alone...

"I watch late night TV and I see all the new bands and I have to say that I am really unimpressed. My twenty-one year old son and I watch things and I say, “Dude, am I just getting old or does this suck?” He says, “No, they suck.” I won’t name any names because that always gets me into trouble but I watch what is supposed to be the new Beatles and it sounds like two cats f**ing. They play the guitar like they have played for six months. What people think is great is not great."

AMEN STEVE!!! I honestly was beginning to wonder if I was the only one who sees no talent in all the popular new crap. Where is the music? Where is the dedication and talent? That was awesome...

I think the funniest part of people making fun of Luke and Toto is that these same people probably own a bunch of albums that Luke played on and they don't even know it!!! :D

People have been saying rock is dead for ages now so I think there's nothing new about his take on "new music". Good for him following his heart and keeping it real.

I hope Luke never hears my band....we do suck...

Nothing to worry about. He's certainly heard my band (and we suck) but we're still friends.

:)

Luke says to Brian, "There ARE other keys, you know."

Brian says, "Yes, we know all three of them, too."

Just because the music is "pop" doesn't mean the musicians/singers aren't talented.
Anyone who thinks ToTo didn't have a mega-talented guitarist just doesn't have a clue and shouldn't be taken seriously. Since I'm not a keyboard or bass player I can't judge those instruments, but as far as judging guitar and vocalizing is concerned, I believe I have somewhat of a clue.
And then there is Bobby Kimball. When he was "on his game" I think he was/is one of the best singers out there.

Even though I'm a mediocre guitarist (on a good day), I can play some flashy/showy solos and the non-guitarists I'm playing for think I'm a guitar god playing 6-billion notes per second. lol
Then I play a solo that's actually difficult to play and they aren't at all impressed. They just don't understand, and I really don't expect them to. I don't let it bother me too much anymore.

Some n00b from Holland, Edward Van Halen, described ToTo as "collectively the best musicians on the planet"
+1

another Lucious cool interview, thanks for the link man!

sometimes i felt that I miss to hear the old hits over and over again from the artist, but beside all of that I actually sometimes didn't realized that the artist such as Lucious always has new ideas and journey to find the new sound and music, reinvent so to speak.. well i guess it's time for Lucious to do his own cool stuff..and the time is now !

Lucious MY MAN! I'm with you bro! I think it's the business side that dictates who's good or not. That's the sad part. I just wish the public will also grow in terms of choosing artists to listen. Anyways, Peace everyone!
