New music, new setting, Bongo still RULES

I recently joined a second band, a 9-piece with a full horn section, playing funk, R&B, Motown.

This is completely unlike the other band I'm in, which plays mostly 60s-70s acoustic pop-rock. It calls for a whole different mindset and sound.

I had my first real practice with the funk band last night, and it went GREAT. The sound was phenomenal, Bongo straight into my Bose L1 -- tone to die for, punchy, clear, plenty loud. I was grooving on it all night long, couldn't stop smiling...and my head is still bobbing.

The Bongo can do it all, and KICKS SERIOUS A$$ along the way.

Is the rest of the band using the Bose system or just you? If just you - how did the band react to the L1?

Just me for the time being.

During my initial contact (audition) I brought two systems and had the keyboard player and singer plug into the other one.

So far they like it, especially the keyboard player. The band leader (guitarist) seems neutral and I get the whole skeptical vibe from him. I need to plug him into it and see how everyone reacts.

Last night I had just the one system, and the keyboard player plugged into his conventional amp. He was at the other end of the room and I couldn't hear him at all. For that matter, I couldn't hear the guitarist very well, who was playing out of a small Marshall combo aimed at his head.

what a great band to be in! i say that cos I played in a local Soul tribute band at the end of the 90s.we had much the same set up as you describe and i remember it as being some of the best,most rewarding work i ever did.

one thing about the Bongo...can you get the old school P-bass sound for the motown era material? the band I was in loved the sound of the SR5 I had then for all the 70s funk and modern RnB but I used to pull out this trans white ash P-bass for the older material and it was the sound .can a twin p/up Bongo do that sound.I know you know the tone i mean.(jamerson,Donald Duck dunn et al)

Glad to hear it's looking good. Interested to know how your first Band is taking it.

I got a call this morning - 2nd Band may be in my future too!

First band doesn't know yet, and they won't until I'm darned sure the second one is going to actually work out. No point in stirring the goulash before then.

However, I have no doubt that it'll be fine. Reason being that the members of first band are my best friends, those rare people who you've known forever (in my case 28 years so far) and who will be friends for life. I will let nothing get in the way of that relationship...my friends will always come first. I'm old enough and wise enough to know that friends you've had this long are precious and that you're lucky to have them.

However, I can't see any conflicts happening. The first band practices once a week at most, and we gig maybe three or four times a year, tops. The dynamic is suct that it'll never get more intense than that.

I have no commitments other than a day job...no kids...so it should be relatively easy to pull off a second practice per week and one gig a month.

adelucia...you're not that far from me. You should come check us out sometime. And I'd appreciate a heads-up if you're gigging.

I know the bongo is a quality instrument. i get compliments ALL the time on the tonal quality of the guitar, and "how much better you sound than our last bassist" etc.

It's the best damn guitar I've ever owned. After years of being a gear-whore, constantly buying and selling guitars, including a Rickenbacker, I don't think I'll ever get rid of my Bongo 5. Never. It's just too damn versatile!

I agree completely.

I have owned lots of basses (Gibson, Charvel, Rikki, Steinberger, Ibanez, etc.) and eventually swore I would never play anything except Fender Ps.

Where are my Fenders now? Thanks eBay!

I use my bongo 90% of the time now and the SUB 4 the other 10%. These are the only 2 basses I currently own and if I ever add another one it will be a Bongo 4 or 5 fretless.

I'm lovin' the Bongo!
