I'm a guitard who probably owns his quota for basses when my Dargie arrives.
Even so, I'll throw out some ideas for group gnashing. ;) For the record the same ideas apply for any potential guitars that GC might commission (hint hint).

One thing I'd vote for would be that the model be back-routed so that it can be pickguard-free and have a fancy top.

Radiused binding on the body.

The other thing would be a piezo bridge regardless of the model.

Call me what you will, but I like those LED fret markers and I think that EBMM could implement them in some unique fashion. Say, in keeping with their 'tiny dot' idea, they could only allow a small hole for the LED to shine through. So it would look more like pinpoints of light or something. Perhaps the 12th fret could have a 'constellation' of light pinpoints that spell "MM".

A switch labeled "Disembowel"... okay maybe skip that idea.

Okay, I'll play.

I'd start with a SUB5, replace the body with one that has a fancy top, put a mirror pickguard on it, replace the bridge pickup with one from an SR5, and route the body for a neck pickup....

Oh, wait...

Too late.

:D :p

Seriously, I was playing my Bongo last night and trying to think of something to make it better, and the only thing I could come up with was different colors. A Bongo in Grape Purple would be cool.

Or NYC taxi cab yellow.

Maybe there is one thing...a repulsor force field generator embedded in the end of the headstock to keep it from acquiring the universal ding on the tip....

I'd like to get a dual pickup + piezo with maple fretboard. Right now that isn't doable, as the only dual pickup + piezo model is the Bongo. Now I love my Bongo, but someday I'd really love a bass with a maple fretboard. For some reason it just looks right to me. :)

I've said before, LEDs/FO lighting would be wicked cool, but I'm not sure that will happen anytime soon.

I remember another forum I frequent (a guitar shop's) had a similar idea, about designing a custom guitar which they were going to get made based on input from forumites and guys in the shop, but it never came to fruition, mainly because everyone has completely different tastes, between all the different styles and options there were hundreds of variations, some would suit a couple of people, but someone else would hate it, and so on...

The one thing that would be doable, would be some kinda of special model, basically the Dargie... Tweaked from normal specs (in this case the special colour and inlays) but still a 'normal' bass, so you can get the different varietys and options as normal built up, something like the pickguardless ray could be another variation of somethign fairly standard, but tweaked into somethign special and limited

All in all, I think the original Dargie Delight Martini Motif instruments worked pretty well as a Forum instrument.

Yes, there will be a few out there that were bought on spec by dealers, but the genesis belongs here and we, the Forumites, purchased most of the DDs.

And that was the best way to pull it off. Not by polls or opinions or overwhelmingly diverse input from an overwhelmingly diverse galaxy of players, including bassists and guitarists (who would never agree on anything anyway), but by someone saying, "This is what we'll do if you want it."

Regarding another Forum Instrument, I personally think we have more than enough to think about and plan for right now. The DDs will be shipping soon, the 07 LEs look to be (anecdotal evidence only) possibly THE most popular LE finish to date, the 20th SR5 is just over the horizon and then there are the BFR instruments. I can also think of possibly one other event on the horizon which will, if it comes to pass, cause more than a few of us to quiver and shake and fear for the well-being of our savings accounts.

I would take you aside and try to get more information via interrogation, but you're a semi-ex-military type and I know I'd only get name, rank, serial number, and probably some martini recipes.
