Hi, MDL. I agree with you about the Axis HB pups. Too dark and muddy for my tastes. I posted a thread a few days ago about the same pickups and some other string spacing issues/questions.

This may not be a whole lot of help to you at the moment, but after doing some research and reading some reviews and various posts here and there, I ordered a set (bridge and neck) of DiMarzio Virtual PAFs. From what I understand those models have now been replaced or re-named as the 36th Anniversary model PAFs, but there are a lot of the Virtual models out there to snag !

I spent a couple of hours yesterday installing them on my new (used) Axis SS Rosewood. I then dicovered that I didnt have the properly gauged set of string to put back on it so I had to pack it away and have been working since then with no chance to string it up and check them out:mad:!

I think the only reservations I have now that I have changed them out is whether or not the new pups will sound as good as the originals did in the 2nd & 4th position split coil configuration.

I WILL get it strung up tonight and get back to you about how they sound. Ciao fer now!

How can I raise the pups? aren't they fixed?

Thanks!!

You can either add spacers, or springs. Your tech can do this for you, or you could do it yourself. It's quite easy... Because, don't forget, the factory sets it at optimum heights, but once you raise your action, that height changes...

I had Jon's Axis SSPT for a while. He had shimmed the pickups and they had a noticeably higher output. I have to say, that guitar sounds phenomenal. (Happy to report that guitar is back in Jon's hands.)

So consider shimming 'em.
