Great

I really love your funky sound with the Silo. It seems that I am not the only one (RocketRalf thinks like me I believe).

I quite liked it indeed. However my favourite tone was the Axis in the neck humbucker position.

The footage that was shot in the control room is of the actual takes we used. So here's what we ended up doing:

Axis Bridge - for heavy intro chords

Sil Spec - Neck/Middle for the Head, and Middle/Bridge for the twangy bit. Neck for Rhythm guitar

EVH - bridge for for most of the first solo then I think I switched to the neck for the end of that.

SM-Y2D Middle - faint arpeggiation part under bass solo

SM-Y2D Neck - 2nd solo.

We used an audix dynamic mike right up on the Engl Cabinet and a Royer Ribbon mike about 2 feet away. I ended up using the dynamic mile for most of the tracks but the ribbon mike was killer for the twangy sound and the plunky arpeggiated stuff.

After that, I fair amount of EQ was used in Pro Tools. I had to compress the heck out of the silhouette to get it to sound like that. The leads have a very light (almost non existent) compression on them.

As a guitar-geek I like to think that wood, pickups, pedals and amps really shape a sound. But as an engineer, I know the harsh reality is that the sound you get from the guitar and amp can be completely destroyed by bad microphone choice/placement.

If you ever get the opportunity, put on a pair of good isolating headphones (or in ears) and listen to what a microphone picks up as you slightly move it around the speaker. It can go from incredible to completely awful in a matter of a few centimeters.

Playback speakers also play a huge part oddly enough. When we were at the studio the tones sounded great coming through the speakers with no EQ at all, but when I brought it home to mix, everything sounded very muddy and had to be adjusted.

Anyway, that's probably more info than you wanted. LOL

Wow, if I didn't love my balls so much, I'd put them in a wood chipper. I hope to be able to play 1/2 as good as that one day. I love the dynamic versatility in that song. Metal, funk, etc. Really killer.

Oh the final solo is beautiful! So petrucci-esque!!

Edit: What the hell am I saying ALL the solo breaks are incredible. Please, become a fusion/funk/prog band :)

That was excellent playing and a really great tune. Variety of tones and styles in there.
