The new twin pups...is the eq and preamp the same as the Bongo?
I see the battery compartment has moved and I was wondering what refinements have been made to the pick ups and preamp from the old design.....

No, they're not the same as the Bongo. Can't remember exactly, but I think the 5 has the same electronics as the 1 PU SR 5 and the 4 has the same as the Sterling. I think...
Do a search and you'll find the answers:)

They are not the same. The most obvious way to tell is the lack of a second battery compartment on the Ray, because bongos are 18v vs. 9v Rays.

Do you know I was just doing a search for the answers - still cannot find a definative explanation beyond "no" - when I worked that one out:rolleyes: ONly seen one Bongo in the flesh over here in Norwich so I excuse myself from my Homer Simpson moment - Doh!:p

I thought all the new dual pickup basses still have the same exact preamp as the old single pup models. The only differences is that on the SR5 and Sterling theres no more coil tapping feature. Then each bass differs as to what kind of magnets whether they are neo, alnico or ceramic.

I will add that the dual pickup Rays and Sterlings have newly designed neck pickups, although the bridge pickups are the same as the single H models. The new dual pickup models just happen to have the bongo pickup covers.

Will have to play the new one next to the one pup version and has a sound test....will be fun.
I thnk what threw me totally (it does not take much as my editor) was the new pick up covers - which are pretty cool.

Thanks all:eek:

OK - Here's my question: On the dual H Stingray, is position #1 on the selector switch (both coils on the bridge humbucker) the same as having a single H Stingray? I think what I understood from other posts is that the bridge pickup is the same pickup and in the same location as on the single H Stingray. If that is the case, to me it's a no brainer to get the HH, you would have the original Stingray sound/tone and other optional tones to boot.

Exactamundo!

Yes, you can nail the original sound on the dualies, but for some people they won't find the neck pickup all that much more useful. That is one of the reasons I went from Dual HH Bongos to Single H Bongos. There is something to be said for point and shoot simplicity. However, when I do decide to pickup a 5 string it will probably be a dualie non bongo, so I am full of contradictions.

I can understand going to the single H Bongo being that the pickup is moved a little further back toward the neck for a little more low end. On the other hand, I can see where the Sterling (I own one) would definitely benefit from a neck pickup. I love the Sterling tone and playability but after buying my HH Bongo (low end galore), the neck pickup on a Sterling makes perfect sense to me.

Its funny because it almost seem that Bongoliods are moving to single pups where as we ray and sterling users are moving towards two pups......probably just me though.

It all stems from a few things:

1.Almost every Bongo you find in stores is HH or H-SC
2.BP commented on how the single H is his fav
3.Because a lot of people have not had the pleasure of playing the single H there is a lot of hype(which I'm sure is deserved)going around.
4.People want something unique that very few on the forum have-be it a color, pickup config, pickguard or a mixture of

If single H bongos had come out first, and HH and H-SC later, everyone would be freaking out about the "new" Bongos.

The best thing to do is buy one of each. :D

I can understand that Mingus....that s why I am proud to have one of the first 20 twin pups in the UK. :D

One of each would be fun...but I will stick for now with the two SR5s I have......

Although dont render the single pup sterlings/sr5s useless. Becasue remember the dual pup models do NOT have the pickup splitting option (series/single coil/parallel) that the originals have.

Oh I would say they (single H Sterlings) are far from useless, in fact I thought they were the greatest thing since sliced bread when I got mine. But, playing a HH Bongo has given me a new appreciation of what I think the bottom end should sound like on a bass. The Sterling sound is great but I can just see where that extra neck pickup would enhance the bottom end.

As I understand it, the dual pickups can be split and combined with one
another on two of the slector switch settings.

I love my sterling. Part of the reason Im so stoked for my new bass to come is cause im curious if ANYTHING can dethrone my sterling. If anything can, this should be able to, so I'm stoked. :) :)
