New Stingray Day!

Well, I took possession of my first ever Stingray 5 HH today.

I've only got to play it through my practice amp at low volumes but so far I seem to favor the bridge pickup the best. When I had my Bongo 5 HH I preferred the pickups blended or the front pickup. Guess there's just something magical about that funky pickup near the bridge on a SR.

It's kind of wierd to have a tung oil neck again. I'm used to satin or gloss finished necks. The bass feels solid. Nice weight to it. Neck width and thickness is perfect. The bass is VERY resonant. The notes just seem to ring out. Much more than the neck thru Spector I sold to get back in good graces with EBMM.

It's got D'Addarios on it (NASTY!) so strings have been ordered for it and a full set up is in order. I'm curious to what settings you guys utilize with this bass?

How do I find out what year it was made and what pickups are in it? I have the serial number on hand.

Very nice looking bass. Congrats .There is the serial number data base in the sticky notes at the top of the main bass forum page, follow the link in the first post or post the serial number. Or if you pull the neck, the date should be printed on the neck and it the body cavity for the neck in the body for an exact date.

Congrats on that beauty! I've never played a Ray5 HH but owned a cool sherwood green SR5.

Well, I just got through playing the Stingray in church and WOW was it amazing.

I used the pickup selector in the 1st position, in the 4th position, and in the 5th position for that classic Stingray tone. Through my practice amp I wasn't really impressed with the different settings but through a bigger rig and with a band it was amazing!

laneline: You were right, there isn't a bad tone in it.

Beautiful looking bass. Whoever said MM have only one tone are full of it.
So many different tones, great feeling neck, and excellent build quality at a
price that sets it apart from all the other in it's price bracket. I love my MM
Sterling 5 HS, almost bought a Stingray from another store but the setup was
extra. I bought my HS from Daniel at Dan's Guitars in Honolulu. Great price plus
he threw in a new set of strings and a setup for free. Talk about service.

Sorry about the rant. You're gonna love that Stingray.

Wow Madbassplaya that's a beauty, congrats.

For SR5 fans, if you go to BBC - Radio 2 there are highlights of the BBC Radio 2 festival in Hyde Park, London last Sunday - James Blunt's bass player uses a white SR5H and Gary Barlow's bass player uses a lefty black SR5H - the bass sound on the Gary Barlow stuff is particularly good. The guy playing with Chic does not use a Musicman and IMO the band sound suffers for it, although his playing is v cool.

...and yes, ...bridge sweet-spotted H pickup on EBMM basses is all that You'll ever need, but anyway neck H and other combinations of inner/outer coils could be useful occasionally for some spiced tones...etc.

I play my SR5 HH at church too, and I constantly change the positions. Can't beat the bridge H for rocking, and the neck H for ballads. Position 2 and 4 for everything in between.
