Hi all,

Just picked up a 1992 EBMM Van Halen. It was purple at one time, but it has faded to a purplish grey. Still cool.

I needed a modern-type guitar with a Floyd that I could use for a hard rock project, and this is perfect for it. It is such a well put-together guitar, and very lively.

I need to get it refretted, as they're pretty worn down.

What is the correct fret profile/gauge for this model? Also - anyone ever put stainless frets on one of these? I live in the UK, so it isn't really a feasible option for me to send it back to Ernie Ball for the refret.

Also - this Gotoh tremolo is a bit odd... I was reading about the loose feel of the bar, and I sorted that by cranking down the bolt under the trem plate, however the bar itself doesn't rotate/spin at all.

How do you loosen that up? There is a collar with a little grub screw around the bar, I've tried loosening/tightening that but to no avail - it doesn't seem to do anything.

Lastly - also related to the tremolo - the action (depressing of the bar) is pretty stiff. I've only got two springs on there, and I've loosened the claw somewhat - but wow, you really need some effort to drop it in pitch. Has anyone else encountered this?

Lastly - the fretboard itself... it is pretty dark. The previous owner must've practiced for hours every day, all over the neck, in a smoky bar. The only spot where it is still pretty light is right next to the locking nut.

Can this be cleaned/restored back to some semblance of its original state, either with 0000 steel wool and/or something else?

thanks!

Try cleaning the fretboard with Ernie Ball Wonder Wipes fretboard conditioner. See how that goes before busting out the steel wool, chances are it just needs a thorough cleaning!

Thanks Kinjin, I've just placed an order for some.

I have to say again that I'm really impressed with this guitar. EBMM are very well thought out, it is a joy to play.

I wish I would've had the dosh to pick one up back in the day when I was a full-time gigging musician. I remember when they came out, I tried one and it was not what I was expecting. I though it was going to be a toothpick-neck shred machine, and instead it was a really comfortable, well-balanced guitar that sounded alive.

Better late than never!

I have standard nickel and stainless fret Axis models. Personal preference, but the SS outlast the nickel and I like the way they play better... More slippy or something about them. Perhaps the surface is smoother on a microscopic level? I'm not an Engineer.
